About thisHUSH

Sleep and air gear is sold with promises no spec sheet backs up. thisHUSH sticks to what can be checked: how loud, how much air, what a sensor really measures and how long a battery lasts.

What we cover

  • White noise machines: fan-based, digital and app-controlled sound machines for bedrooms, nurseries and travel.
  • Sleep headphones and earbuds: low-profile earbuds, headband headphones and Bluetooth sleep masks for side sleepers, including sleep earbuds with noise cancelling.
  • Sunrise alarm clocks: wake-up lights, phone-free alarm clocks and alarms for heavy sleepers.
  • Air purifiers: sized by smoke CADR, with each maker's noise figures and ENERGY STAR and CARB status.
  • Air quality monitors: CO2, particle, VOC and radon monitors, plus hygrometers for humidity.
  • Humidifiers and dehumidifiers: evaporative, ultrasonic and warm-mist humidifiers, and dehumidifiers rated under the current Department of Energy test procedure.
  • Quiet fans: tower, circulator and bladeless fans, chosen by the maker's decibel and airflow figures.

How we research

Every guide follows the same published method, set out on How we choose:

  • We start from the makers' own spec sheets, manuals and support pages.
  • We check them against independent ratings and listings: AHAM Verifide for air purifier CADR, ENERGY STAR, and CARB certification for air cleaners sold in California.
  • We use government and standards guidance, such as EPA's advice on air cleaners and humidity, to frame what the numbers mean.

Every guide ends with a list of the official sources behind it.

What we don't do

  • We don't give medical advice, cover medical devices or make health claims. We describe features and published specs.
  • We don't sell rankings. No brand or retailer can pay for a position or a mention.
  • We don't claim lab tests we haven't done. When a figure comes from a spec sheet, we say whose figure it is.
  • We don't show prices. Prices change by the hour, so the current price always lives on the retailer's page.

Who's behind it

thisHUSH is published by a small, independent research and editorial team. We don't put names or personalities in front of the products: research, editing and fact-checking follow the same method on every guide, and every correction goes to one inbox.

How we're paid

Some links on thisHUSH are affiliate links: if you buy through one, the retailer may pay us a commission, at no extra cost to you. That never decides which products we pick or how we rank them. The details are on our affiliate disclosure.
