Yogasleep Hushh 2 Portable Sound Machine (Lunar Gray)6 sounds · 34 h battery
- See on Amazon
For most bedrooms, the LectroFan Classic is the white noise machine to get: 20 digital sounds (10 fan sounds and 10 noise variations, pink and brown included), no app, and it runs from its USB adapter or any powered USB port. If you'd rather hear an actual fan, get the Yogasleep Dohm Classic: a real fan in an adjustable housing, with no screen, app or timer. For a nursery, Hatch Baby adds a night light and Time-to-Rise light cues, and for travel the LectroFan Micro2 is rated for up to 40 hours of sleep sounds per charge.
Every machine here plays a steady sound that masks the noises around it. What separates them is how that sound is made, what you can choose from, and what each one needs from you: an outlet, a charge, an app or a subscription. Specs, app terms and availability checked November 1, 2026.

Fan, digital or app: how the sound is made
A real fan. The Dohm Classic and SNOOZ Pro have a fan inside, and what you hear is moving air. Yogasleep puts it plainly: "No audio files, no loops, no speakers." The trade-off is choice. You get one sound, shaped by fan speed and a tone control, and no pink or brown noise.
Digital noise. The LectroFans synthesize their sounds. Adaptive Sound Technologies (ASTI), which makes them, lists ten "non-repeating unique fan sounds" and ten "non-repeating unique white noise sounds" on the Classic, with pink and brown variations among them. That lets you pick a deeper or brighter noise than a fan makes.
An app library. Hatch Baby has basic sounds and lights built in, and Hatch's app adds premium stories and songs through a Hatch+ subscription (Hatch's pages differ on whether dynamic lights need it). It's the most flexible design here and the one that depends most on Wi-Fi and an account.

Best overall: LectroFan Classic
The LectroFan Classic gives you the widest choice in a 4.4 x 4.4 x 2.2 in box. You choose from ten electric fan sounds and ten variations of white noise, "including pink and brown noise variations," and ASTI's data sheet describes the volume buttons as "1dB increment control," so you can set it precisely rather than in big jumps.

LectroFan
LectroFan Classic White Noise and Fan Sound Machine (White)
A compact digital sound machine from Adaptive Sound Technologies with 10 fan sounds and 10 non-repeating noise variations from brown through pink to white, powered over USB.
Comes in 5 versions: see which to buy
- 20 sounds
It plays continuously until you use the timer. One press sets 60 minutes, each extra press adds another 60, and then the sound gradually shuts off, according to the owner's manual. Power comes over USB from the included adapter, or from any powered USB port, including a laptop's. The manual notes the USB cable carries power only, not audio. ASTI says the adapter works worldwide, but it has a North American plug, so pack a plug adapter for travel abroad.
Two things to know: ASTI lists no battery, light, app or alarm, and your sound and volume are saved only when you switch it off with the power button, not when you simply unplug it. The warranty is one year.
Best real-fan sound: Yogasleep Dohm Classic
The Dohm Classic is the simplest machine here. A real fan motor makes the sound "without any digital audio," and you shape it by hand: it has low and high speeds, and per Yogasleep's FAQ, rotating the cap changes the volume while rotating the collar shifts the tone. Yogasleep's own comparison table lists no app, timer or night light for it.

Yogasleep
Yogasleep Dohm Classic Fan-Based Sound Machine (White)
Yogasleep's original fan-based sound machine: a real fan motor inside an adjustable housing makes a steady, non-looping rush of air, with two speeds, a rotating cap for volume and a collar for tone.
Comes in 7 versions: see which to buy
It plugs into the wall, measures 5.6 x 5.6 x 3.5 in and weighs 31.5 oz. The trade-off is range: it makes one kind of sound, so if you want brown noise, look at the LectroFan Classic instead.
Best real fan with an app: SNOOZ Pro
The SNOOZ Pro also uses a real fan, which SNOOZ says makes "natural, non-looping white noise," but adds the features the Dohm lacks. It has 10 volume levels and a tone knob on the bottom, and it's the only machine here with a published loudness range: 46 to 87 dBA, "measured at device." That's at the machine itself, so expect less at your pillow.
The app is optional. Without it, you plug the Pro in and set volume and tone by hand. With it, you get remote control, schedules with fade in and fade out, a night light mode and a nursery calibration setting, and SNOOZ says there's "No subscription, ever." A travel case comes in the box, and the 100-240 V adapter has a US plug, so other countries need an outlet adapter. For placement, SNOOZ suggests 3 to 6 feet from your head, between you and the noise.
Best for travel: LectroFan Micro2
At 2 x 2 in, the Micro2 is the machine to pack. ASTI rates its built-in battery for up to 40 hours of sleep sounds, or 20 hours as a Bluetooth speaker, between charges. In sleep-sound mode you choose from five digital fan sounds, four variations of white, pink and brown noise, and two ocean surf sounds. In Bluetooth mode it streams from your phone and has a microphone for calls.
It charges from a USB-A port (5 V, 1 A) in about 2.5 hours, per its quick start guide. The box holds the Micro2, the guide and a USB cable, but no wall plug. The trade-off is choice: four noise variations against the Classic's ten.
Best for strollers and bags: Yogasleep Hushh 2
The Hushh 2 is built to clip on: Yogasleep redesigned its clip for strollers and bags, and rates the battery for up to 34 hours, recharged over USB-C. It has six sounds, "including Dohm, white noise, nature, and calming melodies," an auto-off timer of 30, 60 or 120 minutes, a dimmable night light and a toddler lock on the buttons. It weighs 5.6 oz.

Yogasleep
Yogasleep Hushh 2 Portable Sound Machine (Lunar Gray)
A clip-on rechargeable sound machine with six sounds, a timer, a dimmable night light and a toddler lock, made for strollers, bags and travel.
Comes in 3 versions: see which to buy
- 6 sounds
- 34 h battery
The trade-offs: six sounds is the shortest list here, and Yogasleep doesn't say whether pink or brown noise is among them or publish a volume range.
Best for nurseries: Hatch Baby
Hatch Baby replaces the Hatch Rest: Hatch's Rest pages now redirect to it (checked November 1, 2026), and Hatch lists its changes as a big top button that controls volume and starts a favorite sound, a soft night light and improved audio. It combines a sound machine and a light, and its Time-for-Bed and Time-to-Rise cues work like an OK-to-wake clock. Tuck-Ins let you record your own message or song in the app.

Hatch
Hatch Baby Sound Machine and Night Light (Putty)
Hatch's nursery sound machine and night light, the successor to the Hatch Rest, with a big top button, app control over Wi-Fi, Time-for-Bed and Time-to-Rise light cues and three months of Hatch+ included.
Comes in 7 versions: see which to buy
It's the most connected machine here. You control it from the Hatch app, and Hatch says "A 2.4GHz Wi-Fi connection is required." Three months of Hatch+ come with it. Hatch's FAQ says the subscription is optional after that and "will not auto-renew," but Hatch's terms say that if a free trial is activated, you're billed for a subscription when it ends unless you cancel first, so check what you switch on during setup. Without Hatch+ you keep basic lights and sounds, the Time-to-Rise and Time-for-Bed cues, Tuck-ins and playback from your phone.
Hatch's own guidance: place it at least 3 feet from the baby's sleep space, ideally near the door, with cords out of reach and never on the crib. For volume, Hatch suggests starting the sound at 30% and the light at 35%, and its quick check is that you should be able to talk at arm's length without raising your voice.
How we choose
We haven't lab-tested these machines. Every pick comes from research:
- Spec sheets and manuals. Sounds, controls, power, battery ratings and dimensions come from each maker's product page, manual or FAQ, linked in each section.
- How the sound is made. We sort machines into real-fan, digital and app-library designs, because that decides what you can play and what can repeat.
- Fit. Power source, size and timer behavior for bedrooms, travel and nurseries.
- Terms. App requirements and subscriptions, checked November 1, 2026. For nurseries we repeat the maker's placement and volume guidance and nothing more.
Our full method is on How we choose.
Buying guide
Outlet, USB or battery. The Dohm Classic and SNOOZ Pro need a wall outlet. The LectroFan Classic runs from any powered USB port, including a laptop's or a USB charger's. The Micro2 and Hushh 2 run on their batteries.
Timer or all night. The LectroFan Classic plays all night unless you set its timer in 60-minute steps. The Hushh 2 switches off after 30, 60 or 120 minutes if you set it. The Dohm has no timer, and the SNOOZ Pro's schedules live in its app.
Loudness. Only SNOOZ publishes a decibel range, and it's measured at the device. Placement matters as much as the number: SNOOZ suggests 3 to 6 feet from your head, between you and the noise.
Lights. Neither the Dohm Classic nor the LectroFan Classic lists a light. The Hushh 2's night light dims, and Hatch Baby's light is part of its routine.
Verdict
The LectroFan Classic is the best white noise machine for most people: 20 sounds including pink and brown noise, precise volume, a simple timer and USB power, with no app. Choose the Yogasleep Dohm Classic if you want the sound of a real fan and nothing to set up, or the SNOOZ Pro for a real fan with app schedules and a published volume range. Travelers should pack the LectroFan Micro2, parents on the move the clip-on Hushh 2, and for a nursery with light cues, get Hatch Baby.

Frequently asked questions
Is a fan-based or a digital white noise machine better?
Neither is better on paper; they make sound differently. A fan-based machine such as the Yogasleep Dohm Classic or SNOOZ Pro spins a real fan, so you hear moving air and nothing loops, but you get one kind of sound with a tone control. A digital machine such as the LectroFan Classic synthesizes its sounds, so it can offer fan sounds plus white, pink and brown noise, which its maker describes as non-repeating.
Can a white noise machine play brown noise?
Some can. The LectroFan Classic lists ten noise variations that include pink and brown, and the battery-powered LectroFan Micro2 lists four variations of white, pink and brown noise. Fan-based machines such as the Dohm Classic and SNOOZ Pro play fan sound only, with a tone control that runs from a low hum to a brighter rush of air. Our white vs pink vs brown noise guide explains the difference.
Do Hatch sound machines need a subscription?
Not to work. Hatch Baby includes three months of Hatch+, and Hatch's FAQ says the subscription is optional after that and won't auto-renew, though Hatch's terms say an activated free trial becomes a paid plan unless you cancel, so check what you switch on at setup. Without Hatch+ you keep basic lights and sounds, the Time-to-Rise and Time-for-Bed cues, Tuck-ins and playback from your phone. Checked November 1, 2026.
