For most buyers choosing between these exact Rowenta Turbo Silence fans, get the VU5870U1 Extreme+ for oscillation controlled from its panel or remote and its Natural Breeze mode. Choose the VU5670U2 Extreme if a lower adjustable stand matters: its model table lists 43–55 in, while the VU5870U1 table gives only a 51.2-inch minimum. Both advertise 35 dB(A) in Silent Night, so the published figures do not give the Extreme+ a quietness advantage. (US model pages, Extreme+ page, Extreme+ manual)

The useful upgrade is control over the breeze. Below, we separate actual operating sequences from contradictory marketing fields, and identify the remote that belongs to each suffix. Official documentation checked November 2, 2026.

  • 35 dB(A)Silent Night claim on both US product pages

Sources: Rowenta's VU5670U2 model table, VU5870U1 model table, VU567x operating diagrams and VU587x operating diagrams. The battery conflict is in the VU5670 safety booklet.

Best overall: Rowenta VU5870U1 Extreme+

The reason to choose the white Extreme+ is bedside operation. Its manual shows oscillation switched from the control panel or remote, plus separate Natural and Decrescendo controls. Natural Breeze simulates changing airflow; Decrescendo reduces airflow every fifteen minutes, according to its exact-model support page.

That makes it our pick if you regularly change between a fixed direction and a sweeping breeze. The manual also explicitly documents memory of the last speed used for each speed or mode. These are useful distinctions from a vague promise of a newer or quieter fan.

Its limitations are fit and documentation: the model table gives no maximum adjustable height, and its speed-count and sweep-angle fields conflict with other Rowenta copy. Choose it for the documented controls; confirm any disputed dimension or angle that decides your purchase.

Best for a lower stand: Rowenta VU5670U2 Extreme

The VU5670U2 is the more straightforward choice when you need the published 43-inch minimum. Its page specifies three normal speeds plus Turbo Boost and Silent Night, and the matching stand-fan diagrams show dedicated buttons for those special settings. Its Energy Saving function deliberately decreases airflow; leave that function off if you want a fixed setting. (Model specifications, operating guide)

The trade-off is oscillation control: the manual illustrates lifting or pressing the knob on the motor housing. Its illustrated remote has power, speed, Turbo Boost, Silent Night, timer and Energy Saving controls, with no oscillation button shown. Buy the white model if remote control of the sweep is your priority.

Plan for the remote battery: the current US product table says it is not included, while the linked safety booklet says it is included. Confirm the box contents rather than assuming a missing cell means the remote is faulty.

Five speeds, four presses, and two separate modes

The VU5870U1 inconsistency is real: its specification table says four speeds, while its description, FAQ and support page say five. Reading the VU587x manual's speed sequence helps: it illustrates an initial running level, then four speed-button steps, including Turbo and Night. Counting the initial level gives five positions. Four button presses after startup are not a count of all available positions.

This supports the five-position description, while leaving the contradictory table visible. Natural and Decrescendo describe changing airflow patterns, rather than extra fixed speeds. For a steady breeze, select a normal speed or Night without either pattern engaged. The VU5670U2 similarly separates its normal speeds and special speed buttons from Energy Saving. (Extreme+ support, Extreme specifications)

Which mode owns the noise and airflow numbers?

Both pages attach 35 dB(A) to Silent Night; the white model also explicitly says minimal speed. Both attach their 2,400 cubic ft/min feature claim to maximum speed. The metal model additionally advertises 2,436 cubic ft/min in its headline description. Those are separate operating conditions and, on the metal page, differing airflow figures. (Extreme claims, Extreme+ claims)

Neither model page supplies measurement distance or a common comparison protocol alongside the noise claim. We therefore would not choose between them on decibels, promise that maximum airflow accompanies minimum noise, or use the small difference in advertised maximum airflow as decisive.

Height, tilt and space beside the bed

Start with the model-table heights above. Both pages also reuse an “up to 4.75 ft” height statement in feature copy. That does not reconcile the VU5670U2's 55-inch maximum with the generic claim or establish a VU5870U1 maximum. The white fan's 52.8-inch overall dimension is not labelled as its maximum height adjustment. (Both model pages)

The printed dimension triplets are not labelled as base-footprint measurements. Use them to plan space, then confirm the actual base and sweep clearance if fitting a tight corner. Both tables specify vertical tilt, but their conflicting oscillation angles prevent a dependable coverage comparison.

Both safety booklets require floor placement and say to keep the appliance 20 inches from objects, including curtains and walls. Allow for that clearance when planning its position. (Extreme safety, Extreme+ safety) For the wider tower fan vs pedestal fan decision, return to our best quiet fans guide.

Lights, timers and remote operation

Both manuals illustrate setting indicators without documenting a panel-blackout command or a button-beep mute. The VU5870U1 page's “Mechanical” control-panel label also does not explain its illustrated mode and timer indicators. If complete darkness or inaudible button changes are essential, get confirmation for the exact model before ordering. (Extreme manual, Extreme+ manual, panel specification)

The timer diagrams show 1H, 2H, 4H and 8H choices on both. The VU587x manual additionally diagrams a separate >12H Auto Off condition. Its selectable timer is therefore not the only documented stop condition; check that limit if you need long uninterrupted runs. The VU567x guide does not document an equivalent backstop, which is not a guarantee of indefinite operation.

Both manuals illustrate a 5m/16ft remote range. Use that as the maker's stated range, without assuming it guarantees operation from every position in your room. If your goal is a sound source without these airflow changes, compare our best white noise machines.

Assembly, cleaning and the correct replacement remote

Both safety booklets say the fans arrive unassembled. The VU587x assembly diagrams show the base, pole, blade and grilles assembled separately, with a retaining screw securing the front grille. Read the sequence before assembly; do not assume grille access is tool-free. For routine cleaning, both support pages instruct you to unplug, wipe with a slightly damp cloth and vacuum the front grille, while keeping water out. (Extreme support, Extreme+ support, assembly diagrams)

If your existing fan only needs a remote, start with the documented part:

Each part page lists its respective model, without documenting cross-compatibility. Sharing a CR2032 battery format does not establish a match, and neither replacement-part page specifies a battery in its replacement kit. Keep the full service reference handy: Rowenta's support pages separately list exploded views for /7X0 and /CJ0 versions of each fan.

Buy the exact suffix and kit

Rowenta identifies the VU5670U2 listing with SKU 1830006168 / UPC 023108616805, and VU5870U1 with SKU 1830008159 / UPC 023108815901. Use those identifiers and the full model suffix to cross-check a changed colour selection or sale substitution. Both US model pages currently offer a fan with its remote; the battery disagreement on the black model remains unresolved. (Black kit, white kit)

Before accepting a substitution
  1. Match the model

Check the full suffix and the maker's SKU or UPC against the selected kit.

  2. Match the controls

Choose VU5870U1 for documented remote oscillation; choose VU5670U2 for its published lower height range.

  3. Check the contents

Confirm the remote and battery contents, especially the contradictory VU5670U2 battery descriptions.

How we choose

We compared Rowenta's US model pages, exact-suffix support pages, linked operating and safety booklets, and official replacement-part compatibility tables. We have not physically tested these fans. We read the operating diagrams as sequences, including the initial running level, and kept desk-fan illustrations separate from stand-fan instructions. Our picks weigh useful controls and documented fit; unresolved noise conditions, height and oscillation claims stay unresolved. See How we choose.

Verdict

Choose VU5870U1 for remote oscillation and Natural Breeze. Choose VU5670U2 for its published lower stand height and dedicated special-speed buttons. Neither earns a quieter award from the shared sound claim. If your current fan works and only its remote is missing, match the official replacement part to its complete model reference before replacing the fan.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Rowenta VU5870U1 quieter than the VU5670U2?

Rowenta publishes the same 35 dB(A) Silent Night claim for both. The VU5870U1 page also identifies it as a minimal-speed figure. Neither linked specification provides measurement distance or a shared comparison procedure, so these claims do not establish a quieter winner. Choose between them by controls and height, rather than assuming the Extreme+ name means less noise.

Does the Rowenta VU5870U1 have four or five speeds?

Its product table says four, while Rowenta's description and support page say five. The linked VU587x manual illustrates an initial running level followed by four speed-button steps, ending with Turbo and Night. That supports five positions when the initial level is included. Natural and Decrescendo are separate airflow patterns. The table conflict remains, but the manual explains the operating sequence.

Are the VU5670U2 and VU5870U1 remotes interchangeable?

Rowenta documents different replacements: CS-00139696 for VU5670U2 and SS-1810001534 for VU5870U1. Each accessory's compatibility table names its respective fan, without documenting a match to the other model. Order against the complete model reference on your fan. The shared CR2032 battery format does not establish remote compatibility, and the replacement-part pages do not specify a battery in the replacement kit.

Can either Rowenta Turbo Silence fan run with all lights off?

The linked manuals illustrate setting indicators but do not document a panel-blackout command. They also do not establish whether button sounds can be muted. If darkness and quiet button changes are requirements, obtain confirmation for the exact suffix before ordering. Silent Night is an airflow setting with a published sound claim; it is not documentation of a completely dark control panel.
