About this guide
thisHUSH covers comfort, quiet and air-quality gear, not health. Nothing on this site is medical advice: for sleep, breathing or hearing concerns, talk to a doctor.
For most pet owners choosing between these two, the Levoit Vital 200S-P is our pick: its U-shaped inlet, washable pre-filter and separate Display Off control suit routine fur cleanup and a dark room. Choose the Winix 5510 if you specifically want separate pellet-carbon and True HEPA stages, provided you can confirm availability of the exact US unit. Both have washable pre-filters; neither earns a pet-hair performance win from specifications alone.
Quick picks
- Get the Vital 200S-P for flexible night controls. Its manual separates Display Off from Sleep Mode and lets you disable Light Detection.
- Consider the 5510 for its filter arrangement. Its removable mesh sits in front of separate AOC carbon and True HEPA filters.
- For a larger shortlist, start with our air purifiers for pets or best air purifiers. This page resolves the exact pair.
Winix's official catalog currently disables direct purchasing for the 5510, even though it retains the product specifications and Filter Q remains listed. Confirm the model on the actual unit and the included filters before committing to that alternative. View the Vital 200S-P at the official VeSync store; check Winix's current purifier range.

Sources: Winix's exact-model catalog data, the later Winix manual, Levoit's US manual, standard-filter data and EPA's archived data, Table 7. The CADR entries have different publication bases; they do not establish a current head-to-head winner.
Best starting point for pet homes: Levoit Vital 200S-P
Levoit's product description identifies a U-shaped inlet intended to capture airborne pet fur. Its manual shows a separate pre-filter that releases by pushing its tabs inward. That is the practical feature to prioritize if your buying decision starts with cleaning accumulated hair off the mesh.
The manual calls for pre-filter cleaning every 2–4 weeks with a soft brush or vacuum hose. Washing with water and mild detergent is optional; let it air-dry completely before reinstalling. The main/activated-carbon filter is marked “Do not clean.” Keep that distinction in mind when a listing says “washable filter.”
Levoit also gives you a useful choice at night: select a fan speed and use Display Off, or deliberately select Sleep Mode. Sleep Mode runs below Low and turns off the display after 6 seconds. Display Off instead controls the lights, with an exception for the check-filter indicator.
Choose it for those controls and the inlet design. Pet Mode is another option through VeSync: the manual specifies 15 minutes at High followed by 60 minutes at Medium. It is an alternating fan program, not a separate replaceable pet-hair filter.
Alternative for a separate carbon stage: Winix 5510
The 5510's filter order is mesh at the front, AOC carbon in the middle and True HEPA at the back. Winix describes the AOC stage as carbon pellets. That separate stage is the reason to choose this arrangement; the documents used here do not establish superior pet-odor performance against the Levoit.
For mesh cleaning, the later manual specifies a vacuum or soft brush. If excessively dirty, rinse with room-temperature water without detergent or soap, then dry for at least 24 hours. Its service table says every 14 days; the older manual says every 3 months. Use the later interval as a starting point and inspect the mesh between cleanings.
Filter Q is the exact replacement set, including both the AOC carbon and True HEPA stages. Winix recommends changing both every 12 months, with the manual noting that environment affects replacement timing. The washable pre-filter is permanent in the service table.
The local PlasmaWave button lets you enable or disable that feature. Sleep Mode disables it, with the option to turn it back on. Read the combined manual for the unit's controls; confirm that any purchase is actually a 5510.
Room sizing: resolve the manual revision first
Winix's older 5510-only manual lists a verified room size of 380 sq ft. The later combined manual lists 392 sq ft, matching the current catalog's 392 sq ft at 4.8 air changes per hour. The files do not explain the change, so we identify the revision rather than describe a proven improvement to the machine.
The 5510's 1,882 sq ft in one hour headline uses a different air-change basis from its 4.8-ACH room rating. Do not size a purchase by comparing that large headline with another model's more frequent-air-change rating.
Levoit's manual references 380 sq ft in troubleshooting but gives no ACH basis alongside that number. EPA's historical table lists 263 dust CADR and 242 smoke CADR for LAP-V201S-WUS: the column labels matter. We have not confirmed a current matched-condition AHAM directory entry for both units, so these sources support no current airflow victory or exact room-size advantage for either pick.
AHAM explains that CADR has separate smoke, dust and pollen scores, and that ceilings above 8 feet require a larger-room rating. Before ordering, match the current carton or specification to the same pollutant, air-change basis and ceiling assumption. If the room is beyond the verified rating, return to the broader shortlist.
Dark rooms, lights and apps: choose the behavior you want
Winix describes the 5510 entering Sleep Mode as ambient light decreases and returning to Auto as light increases. The manual says Sleep Mode disables the air-quality LED and sets the fan below Low. That can suit someone who wants automatic quieting, but it couples the nighttime behavior to a slower fan. Auto uses different inputs: Winix's manual describes an odorous-gas sensor; Levoit's describes an infrared dust sensor. We would use a manual speed when a steady fan setting matters.
Levoit's manual says Light Detection is off by default. Enable or disable it in VeSync or by holding the display button for 3 seconds. When enabled in darkness, Auto and Pet Mode avoid High and Turbo; Pet Mode is limited to Medium. Turning the lights off is therefore a setting decision, not merely a cosmetic change.
For independent control of the Levoit's lights, the manual documents Display Off separately from fan-speed selection. For a dark room where you want to maintain a chosen speed, our recommendation is to leave Light Detection disabled, choose the manual speed and then use Display Off. The filter reminder can still illuminate.
Leave Light Detection disabled
The manual says it is off by default; check it if you have changed settings.
Choose a manual fan speed
Select the airflow setting you want before deciding whether its sound suits the room.
Use Display Off
The display control is separate from Sleep Mode; the check-filter reminder can remain lit.
Both machines have local fan controls. Levoit adds a local 2-, 4- or 8-hour timer; Winix assigns its timer to the app. VeSync adds schedules and Pet Mode, and its setup guidance specifies a secure 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network. Decide which extras you need before connecting: local power and fan selection are already documented for both.
Buying guide: filters, variants and the complete box
For replacement costs, compare the complete Filter Q 1712-0123-00 set with the complete Vital 200S Replacement Filter, store SKU HEACAFLVNUS0084A. Levoit's standard replacement already includes activated carbon; its filter page also lists optional Pet Allergy, Toxin Absorber and Smoke Remover choices. A pet-branded refill is optional.
There is no defensible permanent “cheapest replacement filters” winner here. Winix specifies annual replacement; Levoit's standard-filter page says 6–12 months, while its manual says 12 months, adjusted for use. Compare the current complete-pack cost, pack quantity and the change interval that fits your use before buying a purifier around a refill assumption.
Match the unit and box contents as follows. Winix's manual specifies AC 120 V / 60 Hz, mesh, AOC carbon and True HEPA filters. Levoit's US manual includes LAP-V201S-WUS and LAP-V201S-KUS, with a pre-installed washable pre-filter, main/carbon filter and AC adapter. This comparison uses the existing White/Grey LAP-V201S-WUS record.
Filter Q compatibility also includes the 5520 and 5530. Shared refill compatibility alone does not establish identical controls or box contents. For Levoit, match “Vital 200S-P” on the machine and the named replacement's compatibility; the standard-filter listing explicitly identifies the Vital 200S-P series.
- Yes: Exact US purifier model and power supply checked
- Yes: Installed mesh and main filters accounted for
- Yes: Replacement matched by model, part identity and pack quantity
- Partly: A shared replacement filter does not establish identical purifier features
Before first use, both manuals require removing protective packaging from the main filters. Allow placement space too: Winix specifies 12–18 in from walls for maximum airflow, while Levoit specifies at least 15 inches of clearance in front. Measure the usable position before choosing the box.
How we choose
This is a documentation-based recommendation. We compared official product data, US manuals, replacement-filter information and AHAM's sizing explanation; the EPA table is explicitly historical. We have not physically evaluated these units. The unresolved room-size and publication-basis differences are disclosed above, and published controls do not establish comparative odor removal, fur collection or noise performance.
We favor the Vital's documented maintenance access and independent display control for this decision. The Winix remains an alternative for its separate pellet-carbon arrangement, subject to exact-unit availability. Our general method is on How we choose.
Verdict
Choose the Vital 200S-P for its U-shaped inlet, washable mesh and separate display controls. Choose the Winix 5510 when its separate AOC carbon stage is your priority and the exact US unit is available. Settle room fit, night behavior and the complete replacement pack before treating either as the better buy.

Frequently asked questions
Which is better for pet hair: Winix 5510 or Levoit Vital 200S-P?
Our pick is the Vital 200S-P for its U-shaped inlet and removable, washable pre-filter. The Winix 5510 also has a washable pre-filter, so washable mesh alone does not decide this comparison. Choose the Winix if you specifically want its separate AOC pellet-carbon stage. This is a recommendation based on documented features, rather than a measured pet-hair collection result.
Can you wash the main filters in either purifier?
Wash the pre-filters according to each manual, and replace the main filters. Winix says its AOC carbon and True HEPA filters cannot be washed. Levoit says not to clean its main/activated-carbon filter. For the mesh, Winix specifies water without detergent or soap and drying for at least 24 hours; Levoit permits mild detergent and requires complete air-drying.
Can either air purifier work without Wi-Fi?
Both manuals document local power, fan-speed and mode controls. Levoit also provides a local timer and Display Off button; VeSync adds remote control, schedules and Pet Mode. Winix has local fan and PlasmaWave controls, while its catalog assigns the timer to the Winix Smart app. Choose based on the controls you need at the machine, then decide whether to connect the app.
Which has cheaper replacement filters?
Compare complete replacement packs and their change intervals before deciding. The Winix uses Filter Q, SKU 1712-0123-00, with both AOC carbon and True HEPA stages, recommended for replacement every 12 months. Levoit's standard Vital 200S replacement includes a carbon layer and advertises 6–12 months, while its manual says 12 months depending on use. Those documents do not establish a lasting cost winner.
Does the Winix 5510 have a switch for PlasmaWave?
Yes. The combined 5510/5520 manual documents a dedicated PlasmaWave button that enables or disables the feature while the unit is on. It also says Sleep Mode disables PlasmaWave, although you can turn it back on. If you want control over that feature, use the documented button and check the indicator rather than assuming the current operating mode tells the whole story.
