For most homes with pets, our pick is the Levoit Vital 200S-P: a removable washable pre-filter and U-shaped inlet make it a practical starting point for airborne fur. Choose Coway's Mighty2 for a pre-filter that slides out sideways, or the Blueair Blue Pure 211i Max for a larger room. A purifier captures airborne material; keep vacuuming fur off floors and furniture.
Official specifications and upkeep instructions checked November 2, 2026. These are research-based picks.

ACH means air changes per hour. Coway's 1,800 sq ft claim uses a different air-change basis from the other room ratings. Noise ranges also lack a shared measurement setup, so they are not a measured quietness ranking. Sources: Levoit, Mighty2, Blueair, original Mighty.
Best starting point: Levoit Vital 200S-P
The Vital's appeal is maintenance access: its pre-filter comes out separately, and Levoit permits vacuuming or washing it. The additional U-shaped inlet is designed for airborne fur. The main particle filter and activated carbon handle different jobs; the standard replacement already includes carbon, so a pet-labelled upgrade is not required just to get that layer. Product specifications, standard filter.
Choose the exact US LAP-V201S-WUS covered here. Vital 100S-P is another model, not a replacement-filter name for this unit. The optional Pet Allergy carbon filter is LRF-V201-YUS; the standard filter's store SKU is HEACAFLVNUS0084A. Pet filter.
The manual's troubleshooting section mentions 380 sq ft, while the product page specifies 388 sq ft at 4.8 ACH. The table uses the product-page rating, with that documentation difference acknowledged.
Pet Mode has a documentation conflict: the product page describes high/low cycling, but the US manual specifies 15 minutes high, then 60 minutes medium. Use it as a variable-speed convenience, not a promise of continuous maximum airflow. Levoit also limits its HEPA-grade wording to Sleep Mode; we do not extend that label to every speed.

Best access for frequent cleanup: Coway Airmega Mighty2

Coway
The 2026 successor to Coway's Mighty: smoke CADR 240, a washable pre-filter plus a combined carbon and HEPA filter, a PM1/2.5/10 laser sensor, and a purely mechanical design with no ionizer.
Check package and model options
- 240 CFM smoke CADR
- Washable pre-filter + Max2 filter (activated carbon + HEPA)
- 19 dB lowest setting
The AP-1512N lets you slide the pre-filter out from the right side. Leave that side accessible when choosing a spot. Its Max2 filter combines activated carbon and HEPA, so main-filter replacement is one combined change. Mighty2 specifications.
There is a care conflict worth knowing before buying: Coway calls the pre-filter washable on the product page, while its manual directs you to vacuum or wipe it with a dry cloth. Use the manual's dry method pending clarification. Never wash the Max2 filter.
Order the full-size Mighty2 filter, not Mighty2 Mini or the original Mighty's set. The current filter page offers Fresh Starter+, Allergen+ and Intense Smoke+ options. That choice does not establish which has the greatest pet-odor capacity.
Best for larger rooms: Blueair Blue Pure 211i Max

Blueair
A large-room purifier with a 360-degree intake, a washable fabric pre-filter, PM1/PM2.5/PM10 sensing and app control, rated by Blueair at smoke CADR 435 and 674 sq ft.
Check package and model options
- 435 CFM smoke CADR
- 674 sq ft room
- Washable fabric pre-filter + particle and carbon filter (HEPASilent: mechanical plus electrostatic)
- 23 dB lowest setting
Blueair publishes the highest smoke CADR here: 435 CFM, with 674 sq ft at 4.8 ACH. Its fabric pre-filter can be vacuumed from outside; for a deeper clean, remove it, follow its washing label and hang it to dry. This is our larger-room choice, provided you have room to service the sleeve. Specifications, manual.
Buy 211i Max replacements specifically. Its manual now describes both pull-over and wrap-around main-filter designs as compatible. The standard unit includes Particle & Carbon; SmokeBlock is an optional alternative. Blueair says SmokeBlock contains twice the activated carbon of its original filter, but gives no absolute mass in these specifications. HEPASilent combines mechanical and electrostatic filtration. Blueair also warns that newer website CADR figures can differ from packaging after its DOE standards update.
Best for separate filter changes: Coway Airmega Mighty AP-1512HH

Coway
Coway's long-running mid-size purifier: smoke CADR 233 with a washable pre-filter, carbon deodorization filter and HEPA filter, a particle sensor with auto mode, and a switchable ionizer.
Check package and model options
- 233 CFM smoke CADR
- 361 sq ft room
- Washable pre-filter + carbon deodorization filter + HEPA; switchable ionizer
- 24 dB lowest setting
Choose this original Mighty specifically for its separate deodorization and HEPA filters: Coway specifies 6 months for carbon and 1 year for HEPA. Its manual allows vacuuming or water-cleaning the pre-filter, followed by complete drying. Do not wash the deodorization or HEPA filters.
This is an alternative for buyers who value that separate service schedule; we would choose Mighty2 for side access. AP-1512HH and AP-1512N are different filter systems. The HH also has an ionizer with its own on/off control. Match the model plate and the maker's compatibility list when ordering, rather than relying on the word “Mighty.” Product page, HH filter set.
Fur, particles and odors are separate jobs
An accessible pre-filter catches larger airborne debris before the main filter. Levoit explicitly says a purifier does not remove hair from floors or furniture; use a vacuum there. The main particle filter captures airborne material such as dander. Activated carbon is the separate gas-filtering material. Levoit's pet guidance, Vital filter layers.
EPA says filtration supplements source control. Our practical advice: clean the litter box, pet area and other odor sources before treating a purifier as the next purchase. CADR (clean air delivery rate) is a particle rating, not a gas-removal rating. EPA notes that activated carbon needs a substantial amount of material to be effective, and that there is no widely used gas-filter rating equivalent to particle CADR. EPA buying guidance.
- Yes: Accessible pre-filter for larger airborne debris
- Yes: Particle filtration for airborne dust and dander
- Partly: Activated carbon for some gases; capacity is not established by CADR
- No: Hair already on floors and furniture still needs surface cleaning
Size for the room and the speed you will use
Measure the whole area served, including connected space in an open floor plan. EPA's reference chart pairs 400 sq ft with at least 260 CFM CADR, assuming an 8-foot ceiling. Higher ceilings call for more capacity. AHAM's general rule is CADR of at least two-thirds of room area. EPA sizing advice, AHAM's rule.
Levoit's linked page publishes 250 CFM without a pollutant-specific breakdown, so we leave its smoke CADR unconfirmed. The other makers explicitly identify smoke figures. EPA says CADR is typically measured at the highest speed; lower fan speeds filter less air. Do not pair a maximum CADR with the quietest noise figure as though both describe the same setting. None of the linked specifications establishes low-speed CADR for this comparison.
For more room-size choices, see our air purifier buying guide. If you also want a separate fan, compare controls and published noise in our quiet fans guide.
Replacement filters and the upkeep commitment
The carbon descriptions below establish construction, not odor-removal rankings. Absolute carbon mass is not stated in these linked records. Even Blueair's relative SmokeBlock claim cannot tell you which brand will retain more gas.

A cleaning routine for the Vital 200S-P
Levoit specifies pre-filter cleaning every 2–4 weeks. Its manual permits a soft brush or vacuum hose, then an optional wash with water and mild detergent; let it air-dry completely. The main particle/carbon filter is marked do not clean. Follow this sequence from the US manual:
Switch off and unplug
Open the front cover and release the pre-filter tabs.
Remove captured fur
Use a soft brush or vacuum hose on the removable pre-filter.
Wash only the pre-filter if needed
Use water and mild detergent; leave the main particle/carbon filter alone.
Dry completely and refit
Let the pre-filter air-dry before putting it back.
For Mighty2, use its dry-cleaning method every 2–4 weeks. The original Mighty also specifies 2–4 weeks, allowing water cleaning. Blueair instead says to clean when dust or dirt is visible and follow the fabric label for washing. These instructions are model-specific; “washable pre-filter” does not make the main filter washable.
Placement that leaves room for maintenance
EPA advises keeping airflow clear of curtains and other obstructions. Levoit specifies at least 15 inches / 38 cm in front of the Vital. Leave Mighty2's right side accessible for its sliding screen and leave access to Blueair's removable top. Choose a location where you can service the purifier without abandoning that routine. EPA placement, Vital manual.
How we choose
We compared official US product pages, manuals and replacement-filter records, prioritizing pre-filter access, published room ratings and identifiable consumables. We have not physically tested these purifiers or measured fur collection, sound or odor removal. Awards are editorial judgments based on those documents.
CADRs here are maker-published figures. The AHAM directory did not expose readable model rows in this research, so we do not claim independently confirmed directory values. Missing carbon mass and low-speed CADR prevent stronger comparisons. Our broader approach is on How we choose.
Verdict
Start with the Vital 200S-P for a removable pre-filter with explicit washing instructions. Pick Mighty2 if side access will make cleanup easier, Blue Pure 211i Max for its larger published room rating, or the original Mighty HH if you want separate carbon and HEPA changes. For odor-first buying, these specifications do not support a winner: address the source and do not mistake particle CADR for carbon capacity.
Frequently asked questions
Do air purifiers help with pet hair?
They can capture airborne fur, dander and dust, but they do not remove hair from floors or furniture. Levoit explicitly recommends pairing air purification with vacuuming. For shedding households, prioritize an accessible pre-filter that catches larger debris before it reaches the main filter. Our starting pick is the Vital 200S-P because its pre-filter is removable and washable; keep cleaning surfaces as well.
Will an air purifier remove dog odors or cat litter smells?
An activated carbon filter can capture some odor-causing gases, but a particle CADR does not rate odor removal. EPA says carbon needs a substantial amount of material to be effective. None of the linked specifications gives an absolute carbon mass, so we cannot rank these picks by odor capacity. Deal with the odor source first; do not expect a purifier to replace litter-box or pet-area cleaning.
What size air purifier do I need with pets?
Measure the whole area the purifier will serve, including connected space in an open floor plan. Compare room ratings on the same air-change basis, and allow for higher ceilings. For reference, EPA's sizing chart pairs a 400 sq ft room with at least 260 CFM CADR at an 8-foot ceiling. The lowest noise setting does not establish how much air a purifier filters at that speed.
Can I wash an air purifier filter?
Check the exact model and filter layer. The Vital 200S-P pre-filter can be washed with water and mild detergent, then air-dried completely. Its main particle/carbon filter must not be cleaned. Blueair permits washing its fabric pre-filter according to its label, but not its main filter. Mighty2's product page says washable, while its manual specifies vacuuming or a dry cloth; use that dry method pending clarification.
