About this guide
thisHUSH covers comfort, quiet and air-quality gear, not health. Nothing on this site is medical advice: for sleep, breathing or hearing concerns, talk to a doctor.
Choose an air purifier for airborne particles and a humidifier for measured dry air: filtration and adding moisture are different jobs. Our filtration pick is the Levoit Core 300S-P; choose the Levoit Classic 300S for automatic humidification. If humidity is unknown, borrow a hygrometer first.
Start with a humidity reading
EPA describes 30–50% relative humidity (RH) as an ideal indoor range, and its humidifier guidance says do not humidify above 50%. It also says to reduce humidifier use or output if condensation or dampness appears. These moisture guideposts do not dictate purifier purchases. (EPA humidity guidance; humidifier instructions.)
Take readings before adding mist, then repeat them across the day. Our buying rule is:
Repeatedly below 30% RH
Consider a humidifier. Add a purifier only for a separate airborne-particle concern.
30–50% RH
Skip humidification. Choose a purifier if you want particle filtration.
Above 50% RH or visible condensation
Do not add moisture. Investigate the moisture source; consider dehumidification if needed.
No low humidity and no particle concern
Buy neither appliance for now.
Write down the room dimensions, particle sources and your willingness to change water and clean. EPA puts source control and ventilation with clean outdoor air ahead of filtration; a purifier supplements that work. A musty, damp room needs its moisture source addressed: filtration does not resolve a moisture problem. (EPA air-cleaner guide.)

ACH means air changes per hour. Humidifier room claims are not comparable to a purifier's particle-filtration rating. See each pick's official specifications below.
Measure first: TempPro TP50
The TP50 is our first purchase for unknown humidity. It displays temperature, humidity and high/low records, with a stand, magnetic back and hanging mount. TempPro specifies humidity accuracy of ±2% RH from 30% to 80%, otherwise ±3%; repeat borderline readings. (TP50 specifications.)

TempPro
A basic battery-powered thermo-hygrometer (sold for years as the ThermoPro TP50) with an LCD showing high and low records, a comfort indicator and three ways to place it.
Check package and model options
- Temperature, relative humidity
Buying trap: the maker's title says “Large Backlit,” but its specification table says “Backlight: No.” Do not purchase on the assumption that it lights up. The pack selector offers single and multipack quantities; check the count before ordering.
Small-room filtration: Levoit Core 300S-P
Choose this for particle filtration with app schedules. Levoit specifies 141 CFM CADR, without identifying the pollutant, and 219 sq ft at 4.8 ACH. The larger 1,051 sq ft claim uses 1 ACH; use the smaller, more frequent-filtration figure for this buying decision. Its Original three-stage filter comes installed, and VeSync adds schedules and voice control. (Levoit specifications.)
Levoit's product page lists 22–50 dB, while its linked series manual says 22–54.5 dB; neither specifies a quiet-mode CADR. EPA notes that lower fan speeds filter less air. Size for the setting you can tolerate, without assuming maximum airflow in sleep mode. Core 300S-P is the purifier; Classic 300S is the humidifier. Their names do not make them interchangeable.
Washable pre-filter: Coway Airmega Mighty2 AP-1512N
Coway lists smoke CADR 240, without a unit in its table, and pairs a washable pre-filter with a combined activated-carbon/HEPA Max2 filter. Its noise range is 19–50 dB; again, that is not a quiet-mode CADR. Choose it if you prefer a washable pre-filter to dry brushing or vacuuming. (Coway specifications.)

Coway
The 2026 successor to Coway's Mighty: smoke CADR 240, a washable pre-filter plus a combined carbon and HEPA filter, a PM1/2.5/10 laser sensor, and a purely mechanical design with no ionizer.
Check package and model options
- 240 CFM smoke CADR
- Washable pre-filter + Max2 filter (activated carbon + HEPA)
- 19 dB lowest setting
Coverage needs context: Coway's page advertises 1,800 sq ft at 1 ACH. Its manual lists multiple coverage timings but describes its coverage basis as two air changes per hour. Those are different bases, so do not compare the headline directly with Levoit's 4.8-ACH figure.
For a common reference, AHAM's room-size rule is smoke CADR × 1.55, assuming an 8-foot ceiling. Its worked example pairs 100 CFM with 155 sq ft. We leave Coway's area unconverted because its product table does not identify the CADR unit. (AHAM explanation; Coway manual.)
Variant: this is Mighty2 AP-1512N, with Max2; the original Mighty AP-1512HH lists separate deodorization and HEPA filters plus a bipolar device. Match replacement filters to the model. (Original Mighty specifications.)
Automatic humidity control: Levoit Classic 300S
For repeatedly low RH, this is our automatic-control choice: a 6 L, top-fill ultrasonic humidifier with auto mode targeting 40–50% RH, or a target customized through VeSync. Levoit rates it for 215–505 sq ft and up to 60 hours on low mist. Read that runtime as a low-mist tank claim, not a water-change schedule. (Classic 300S specifications.)
Choose it over the Carepod when automatic humidity adjustment matters more than dishwasher-compatible stainless parts. Its mist settings are Low, Medium, High and Auto; Auto is included in the maker's “four” settings, not an extra manual mist level. The US manual says no part goes in a dishwasher and recommends purified or distilled water.

Accessible cleaning parts: Carepod One
Choose the One for its removable stainless steel tank and inner lid. Carepod specifies a 4 L tank, up to 500 sq ft and up to 30 hours. Its three cleaning components are the tank, inner lid and wand. The detailed instructions permit dishwashing the stainless parts and tell you to hand-wash only the lower wand, keeping its plug out of water. (Carepod specifications and cleaning instructions.)

Carepod
Carepod One Stainless Steel Ultrasonic Humidifier
A filter-free ultrasonic cool-mist humidifier with a stainless steel tank that breaks down into three parts for cleaning, with three mist levels and a timer.
Check package and model options
- 500 sq ft room
“Filter-free” means no humidifying filter to replace; it does not mean no cleaning. Check RH with your separate meter and adjust mist accordingly. Variant: the newer One Plus adds mood lighting; its page still specifies a 4 L tank and 500 sq ft. Choose the original One if you do not need lighting. (One Plus specifications.)
How we choose
Our recommendations come from official product specifications, manuals and EPA/AHAM guidance, without physical testing. We compare the stated operating basis, cleaning access, control options and exact model names. CADRs here remain manufacturer figures: we could not retrieve model-level results from the AHAM directory, so we do not claim independent directory verification. Unknowns stay unknown. Our broader method is on How we choose.
Buying guide: water, upkeep and using both
Choose the humidifier mechanism before the tank size
EPA describes ultrasonic humidifiers as making cool mist through sound vibrations. An evaporative humidifier instead uses a fan and wet wick or other absorbent material; EPA says evaporative models are not expected to disperse substantial minerals. Consider that format if low-mineral water is impractical; check wick-care and replacement instructions. A humidifier wick is not a substitute for a purifier's particle filter. (EPA mechanism guide.)
White dust is a water decision first. EPA says ultrasonic units can disperse tap-water minerals, leaving white dust, and recommends low-mineral water such as distilled. Carepod's page allows “distilled or filtered” water, while Levoit's manual says “purified or distilled.” Use distilled as the clearer starting choice for mineral control; EPA notes that bottled spring or mineral water has not had its minerals removed. Do not buy a purifier merely to compensate for a humidifier's water choice.
Compare the maintenance you will actually do
The Core 300S-P manual calls for brushing or vacuuming its outer pre-filter every 2–4 weeks, without water, and main-filter replacement around 6–8 months, depending on use. Coway lists one year for Mighty2's Max2 filter, alongside its washable pre-filter. Check replacement-part availability before buying either. (Core manual; Coway specifications.)
For portable humidifiers, EPA says to unplug, empty, wipe dry and refill daily, and clean every third day. Levoit's Classic manual instead specifies weekly cleaning; Carepod's manual says water should not stand beyond 48 hours. We recommend EPA's more frequent water and cleaning schedule, using each maker's approved methods. Rinse cleaning agents thoroughly. A longer advertised runtime does not override that routine.
Give each appliance its own space
Using both is reasonable when you need both jobs, provided the manuals allow your layout. The Classic manual requires a hard, flat, water-resistant surface at least 12 inches / 30 cm from walls; the Core manual requires 15 inches / 38 cm clearance on all sides. These clearances do not specify a universal appliance gap.
Levoit warns that ultrasonic mist near the Core can affect its particle sensor and turn the indicator red. Coway's Mighty2 manual explicitly says not to place it near a humidifier. Separate them, direct mist away from the purifier, and keep surfaces dry; if that layout does not fit, reconsider the combination. Mist beside a red indicator does not prove filtration failure.
- Yes: Both jobs needed: filtration and added moisture can be separate requirements
- Yes: Keep each appliance's required clearances and the purifier dry
- Partly: Ultrasonic mist near the Core can distort its particle-sensor reading
- No: A purifier does not remove excess room humidity
Once you know the job, use our best air purifiers to compare filtration options or best humidifiers to choose a water-and-cleaning routine. For measuring and interpreting RH, continue with indoor humidity and hygrometers.
Verdict
Measure first, then buy for the job. Choose the Core 300S-P for smaller-room filtration or the Mighty2 AP-1512N if you prefer a washable pre-filter. For measured dry air, choose the Classic 300S for automatic humidity control or Carepod One for accessible stainless cleaning parts. If humidity is adequate without a particle concern, buy neither.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an air purifier and a humidifier?
A standalone particle purifier circulates room air through a filter; a humidifier adds moisture. Choose filtration for airborne particles and humidification for repeatedly low relative humidity. EPA describes 30–50% RH as an ideal indoor range and says not to humidify above 50%. Our buying rule is to measure first, then choose either job independently; you may need both appliances or neither.
Can you use an air purifier and a humidifier together?
Yes, if you need both functions and can follow both manuals' placement instructions. Keep mist away from the purifier and its intake. Levoit's Core 300S-P manual warns that ultrasonic mist can affect its particle sensor and turn the indicator red. Coway's Mighty2 manual says not to place it near a humidifier. If your room cannot accommodate suitable separation, choose another layout or appliance combination.
Does an air purifier dry out the air?
A standalone purifier does not remove water vapor as a dehumidifier does. Dyson distinguishes moving air from removing moisture: airflow can make the room feel different without reducing humidity. Check a hygrometer before buying a humidifier to counter that feeling. If readings are already in EPA's ideal 30–50% range, our recommendation is to skip adding moisture.
Can I use tap water in an ultrasonic humidifier?
EPA says ultrasonic humidifiers can disperse tap-water minerals and leave white dust, and recommends low-mineral water such as distilled water. Levoit's Classic 300S manual recommends purified or distilled water. Carepod's product page says distilled or filtered water; EPA's guidance makes distilled water the clearer starting choice when mineral dust is the concern. Water choice does not replace routine cleaning.
