About this guide
thisHUSH covers comfort, quiet and air-quality gear, not health. Nothing on this site is medical advice: for sleep, breathing or hearing concerns, talk to a doctor.
For an open kitchen and living room, our first pick is Blueair Blue Pure 211i Max: its published 435 CFM smoke CADR and washable fabric pre-filter suit particle cleanup in a connected space. Choose Coway Airmega Mighty2 AP-1512N for a smaller room and slide-out pre-filter access; consider the maker-linked Winix 5520 below if you prefer a rinseable mesh pre-filter. Run the purifier alongside an outdoor-venting range hood, in a dry location away from stove heat, steam, splashes and grease.

ACH means air changes per hour. The Coway estimate applies AHAM’s room-size rule, smoke CADR multiplied by 1.55, rounded to about 370 sq ft; it is our calculation, not a certified Coway room rating. CADR is generally measured at the highest speed and rates particles, not odor removal. Figures come from Blueair, Coway and Winix.
Source: Maker specifications linked above; published CADR generally reflects the highest fan speed.
Start with exhaust, then size the connected room
Cooking produces particles, with the amount depending on the food, cooking method and fat used. EPA’s cooking guidance says to use an outdoor-venting hood whenever cooking, leave it running for 10–20 minutes afterward, and favor back burners when possible. Clean the hood’s grease filter and cooking surfaces. If you lack outside exhaust, open windows when outdoor air quality, weather and safety allow, or use an available exhaust fan. Filtration supplements these measures.
For an open plan, count the connected kitchen, dining and living space. EPA’s estimating chart calls for at least 260 CFM for 400 sq ft or 390 CFM for 600 sq ft, with an 8-foot ceiling. Thus neither the Coway’s 240 nor the Winix’s 253 meets that 400-square-foot example; Blueair’s 435 exceeds the 600-square-foot example. Taller ceilings need more capacity, and very large areas may need multiple units.
To account for volume, a rough sizing calculation is required CADR in CFM ≈ connected floor area in sq ft × ceiling height in feet × 4.8 ÷ 60. This rearranges AHAM’s airflow/room-volume relationship using its rounded 4.8-air-change benchmark; it estimates particle capacity, not cooking cleanup time. Lower fan speeds filter less air, so choose capacity you can actually run during cooking and afterward.
Exhaust at the source
Run an outdoor-venting hood during cooking and for 10–20 minutes afterward.
Count the connected volume
Include adjoining living and dining space; allow more capacity above an 8-foot ceiling.
Choose a usable fan speed
Published CADR generally reflects the highest speed; lower settings filter less air.
Best for an open kitchen and living room: Blueair Blue Pure 211i Max

Blueair
A large-room purifier with a 360-degree intake, a washable fabric pre-filter, PM1/PM2.5/PM10 sensing and app control, rated by Blueair at smoke CADR 435 and 674 sq ft.
Check package and model options
- 435 CFM smoke CADR
- 674 sq ft room
- Washable fabric pre-filter + particle and carbon filter (HEPASilent: mechanical plus electrostatic)
- 23 dB lowest setting
Choose this when airflow is the deciding factor: its 435 CFM smoke CADR is the highest here, and Blueair specifies 674 sq ft at 4.8 ACH. HEPASilent combines mechanical and electrostatic filtration; buyers seeking a purely mechanical design should account for that distinction.
The fabric pre-filter can be vacuumed with a soft brush or washed according to its label, then hung to dry. The main particle/carbon filter must be replaced, never washed. Leave space above the unit to lift off its top for filter changes. The manual also confirms that both pull-over and newer wrap-around replacement-filter designs fit this model.
The trade-off is physical space: Blueair lists a 22.7-inch height and a 14.4 × 14.4-inch footprint. Its published 23–53 dB range describes low through high settings; do not pair the low-setting noise figure with maximum CADR. Blueair also warns that updated DOE-based CADR figures can differ from older packaging.
Best for easy pre-filter access: Coway Airmega Mighty2 AP-1512N

Coway
Coway Airmega Mighty2 AP-1512N
The 2026 successor to Coway's Mighty: smoke CADR 240, a side-access pre-filter plus a combined carbon and HEPA filter, a PM1/2.5/10 laser sensor, and a purely mechanical design with no ionizer.
Check package and model options
- 240 CFM smoke CADR
- Removable pre-filter + Max2 filter (activated carbon + HEPA)
- 19 dB lowest setting
The Mighty2’s useful kitchen-adjacent feature is its pre-filter sliding out to the right. Reserve that service space before buying. Its 240 CFM smoke CADR makes it the smaller-room choice here. Coway’s headline 1,800 sq ft uses one air change per hour, so it is not comparable to Blueair’s 674-square-foot figure at 4.8 ACH.
Care instructions conflict: the product page calls the pre-filter washable, but the AP-1512N manual directs vacuuming or wiping with a dry cloth and lists cleaning every 2–4 weeks. Follow that dry method pending clarification. The combined Max2 carbon/HEPA filter must not be washed. This care caveat matters more than the broad “washable filter” shorthand when choosing for cooking-related loading.
Rinseable mesh alternative: Winix 5520
The US Winix 5520 is our maker-linked alternative: 253 CFM smoke CADR and a maker-stated 392 sq ft at 4.8 ACH, described as AHAM Verifide. Winix currently lists the 5520 in its catalog. We have not confirmed an Amazon configuration for this model.
Use the matching 5510/5520 manual. It allows vacuuming or soft brushing the mesh pre-filter; if excessively soiled, rinse with room-temperature water, without soap, and dry for at least 24 hours. It lists routine pre-filter cleaning every three months, with intervals varying by air quality; inspect visible loading between reminders. Neither the AOC carbon nor True HEPA filter can be washed. This makes it an alternative for buyers who want expressly documented rinsing, provided placement fits.
Two buying traps: the older 5510-only manual lists 380 sq ft, while the joint manual lists 392 sq ft; keep model and document revision together. Also, the 5520 automatically reduces fan speed when the room darkens. Use its manual fan controls if that behavior conflicts with post-cooking cleanup. PlasmaWave can be switched off with its own button.
Placement: leave the cooking zone and the filters accessible
Our starting position is a dry, stable floor location on the living or dining side. Keep it away from heat, splashes, steam and oily residue. The Winix manual specifically excludes proximity to stoves, steam and deep fryers; Blueair requires separation from heated surfaces and liquids. A purifier is not a grease extractor.
Winix specifies 12–18 in. from walls; Blueair’s support guidance says at least 10 cm from objects or walls. Coway requires sufficient circulation and unblocked sides, plus room for that right-side pre-filter removal. Do not transfer one maker’s clearance to another model, tuck an intake behind curtains, or put the outlet under an obstructing shelf. Our air purifier placement guide covers room layouts.
Compare the whole replacement order
Unplug before filter maintenance. Keep the reusable pre-filter and replace the main media with the exact model’s set; a pre-filter-only listing does not supply the main replacement filters.

These are planning intervals, not a promised kitchen service life. EPA says dirty, overloaded filters work poorly; Coway specifically says severe pollution can accelerate filter odors and change replacement frequency. Inspect the pre-filter when visibly dirty and follow the model’s care instructions rather than trying to wash a loaded main filter back into service.
Variants, bundles and the limits of odor claims
The base Blueair includes its Particle & Carbon filter and fabric pre-filter. A subscription schedules later replacements; it does not establish that a spare ships with the purifier. Its SmokeBlock bundle page has conflicting copy: the itemized shipment names SmokeBlock, the introduction says AllergenBlock, and the box list mentions only the standard installed filter and pre-filter. Confirm the selected bundle’s actual contents before paying.
For Coway, match AP-1512N Mighty2 and the selected filter option: its current filter page also offers Mighty2 Mini and Fresh Starter+, Allergen+ and Intense Smoke+ selections. This guide’s baseline replacement is Fresh Starter+. For Winix, the 5520 manual identifies Filter Q; the maker lists Q compatibility with 5510, 5520 and 5530. Match the full model and filter code, not a similar family name.
SmokeBlock’s advertised 2× carbon is a material comparison, not proof of twice the odor removal. EPA says CADR rates particles only and gas filtration needs substantial media. If persistent cooking odors or gases drive the purchase, continue to our VOC air purifier guide. None of these particle-airflow numbers establishes gas performance; Winix explicitly says its unit does not remove carbon monoxide.
How we choose
This is a document-based comparison of US manufacturer pages, exact manuals, filter specifications and EPA/AHAM guidance, checked November 3, 2026. We prioritized smoke CADR, access for frequent pre-filter care, permitted placement and a complete recurring filter order. Recommendations are editorial judgments from those documents; we have no measured cooking-clearance times or kitchen odor-removal results.
Individual AHAM directory entries could not be retrieved, so we label airflow as maker-published and the Winix verification as its maker’s claim.

Verdict
Choose Blueair 211i Max for an open kitchen/living area where its airflow fits the connected volume. Choose Coway Mighty2 for a smaller room and convenient dry pre-filter cleaning. Consider Winix 5520 for documented mesh rinsing and the exact Filter Q replacement set. Prioritize outside exhaust and a placement you can maintain before choosing any purifier.

Frequently asked questions
Will an air purifier remove cooking smells?
Activated carbon can capture some gases, but EPA says effectiveness depends on having a large amount of material. Smoke CADR measures particles, so it cannot tell you how quickly cooking smells will disappear. Use an outdoor-venting range hood first. Choose the purifier for particle airflow, then investigate gas-media capacity separately if persistent odors are the main problem.
Where should I put an air purifier in a kitchen?
Choose a dry, stable location on the adjoining living or dining side, away from stove heat, splashes, steam and oily residue. Keep intakes and outlets clear. Winix specifies 12–18 in. from walls; Blueair support specifies at least 10 cm from objects or walls. Allow room to remove the filters, including clearance to the right of the Coway Mighty2.
What size air purifier do I need for an open kitchen?
Include the connected living and dining space, rather than measuring only the kitchen. EPA’s estimating chart lists a minimum CADR of 260 CFM for 400 square feet and 390 CFM for 600 square feet, based on an 8-foot ceiling. Taller ceilings require more capacity. Published CADR usually applies at the highest fan speed, so a quiet setting provides less airflow.
Can I wash filters loaded with cooking residue?
Wash only a pre-filter whose exact instructions allow it. Blueair permits washing its fabric pre-filter according to its label. Winix permits rinsing its mesh pre-filter without soap, followed by at least 24 hours of drying. Coway’s Mighty2 product page says washable, but its manual directs vacuuming or a dry cloth; follow that dry method pending clarification. Replace the main filters rather than washing them.
