About this guide
thisHUSH covers comfort, quiet and air-quality gear, not health. Nothing on this site is medical advice: for sleep, breathing or hearing concerns, talk to a doctor.
Put an air purifier in the room you use most, on a surface its manual permits, with the intake and outlet unobstructed—the EPA's starting point. For a small bedroom or office, the Levoit Core 300S-P is our compact-body pick, provided you can leave its required 15 inches / 38 cm on all sides. Choose the position from the exact-model ledger below before deciding whether it belongs beside the bed, near a wall or on a desk. Core manual, p. 7
Quick picks: buy for the space you can leave open
- Small-room body: Core 300S-P. Compact dimensions, substantial surrounding clearance; check both before buying.
- Right-side service access: Coway Mighty2 AP-1512N. Choose it when its slide-out pre-filter will remain accessible.
- Open living area: Blueair Blue Pure 211i Max. Surrounding intake, upward outlet and a larger published room rating.
- Front-access alternative: Levoit Vital 200S-P. Its specified front gap differs from the Core's all-sides rule. Keep the other air openings clear too.
Exact-model clearance and footprint comparison
Dimensions below are the body width × depth, before adding breathing room. Clearances come from the linked manuals, except Blueair's numeric gap, which comes from its separate Blue Pure Max placement guidance.

Sources: Core manual and specifications; Vital manual and specifications; Mighty2 manual and specifications; Blueair manual, specifications and placement guidance. The Blueair manual download is named English_10.3.24; the placement page is dated December 5, 2024. Match your unit's label and supplied manual if they differ.
The useful surprise: a smaller housing does not automatically need less open space. Compare the Core's all-sides gap with Blueair's obstacle gap, then mark out the body and required gaps together. An unspecified rear gap on the Vital is not a promise that flush mounting is suitable.
Compact-body pick: Levoit Core 300S-P

Levoit
A compact Wi-Fi purifier with a 3-stage filter, sleep mode and app or voice control, sized by Levoit at 219 sq ft on the 4.8-air-change basis.
Check package and model options
- 219 sq ft room
- 3-stage filter (Levoit's 'Original' filter; the page does not call it True HEPA)
- 22 dB lowest setting
Choose this for a small room where you can preserve its surrounding space. Levoit publishes 219 sq ft at 4.8 air changes per hour, with 141 CFM CADR that its specification block does not identify as smoke, dust or pollen. Its manual's component drawing shows lower housing inlets and top outlets; filter access is underneath. Specifications; manual, pp. 5, 7
Variant check: the cited manual explicitly covers the Core 300S series and Core 300S-P Series. The separate Core 300-P product is a different model; use its own instructions. Levoit's Core 300S-P page gives 22–50 dB, while the linked US manual gives 22–54.5 dB. Those published ranges conflict; neither establishes delivery at the lowest setting. Core 300-P
Right-side service pick: Coway Airmega Mighty2 AP-1512N

Coway
Coway Airmega Mighty2 AP-1512N
The 2026 successor to Coway's Mighty: smoke CADR 240, a side-access pre-filter plus a combined carbon and HEPA filter, a PM1/2.5/10 laser sensor, and a purely mechanical design with no ionizer.
Check package and model options
- 240 CFM smoke CADR
- Removable pre-filter + Max2 filter (activated carbon + HEPA)
- 19 dB lowest setting
The reason to shortlist the Mighty2 here is its right-sliding pre-filter. Preserve access on that side and at the front instead of trapping it between a cabinet and a wall. Coway specifies a firm, flat, dry surface with sufficient circulation, prohibits blocking both surrounding sides, and says to keep the outlet clear. Manual, pp. 5, 7–8
Coway publishes smoke CADR 240 and 19–50 dB. Its 1,800 sq ft product-page coverage is explicitly at one air change per hour; don't compare it directly with another model's 4.8-change room rating. White and beige are covered by this manual. The original Mighty AP-1512HH is a different model; consult its own manual. Mighty2 specifications; original Mighty
Open living-room pick: Blueair Blue Pure 211i Max

Blueair
A large-room purifier with a 360-degree intake, a washable fabric pre-filter, PM1/PM2.5/PM10 sensing and app control, rated by Blueair at smoke CADR 435 and 674 sq ft.
Check package and model options
- 435 CFM smoke CADR
- 674 sq ft room
- Washable fabric pre-filter + particle and carbon filter (HEPASilent: mechanical plus electrostatic)
- 23 dB lowest setting
Blueair publishes smoke CADR 435 CFM, 674 sq ft at 4.8 air changes per hour, a 360-degree intake and a top outlet. This is our living-room option when the connected area fits that rating and the surrounding gap stays open. Its manual permits the floor or a stable surface, prohibits objects on top or directly against it, and prohibits extension cords and power strips. Specifications; manual, p. 3
Variant check: preserve 211i Max in the name. The manual covers model 3613111100 in several finishes; the page says Nordic Fog, while the manual lists Stockholm Fog. It also documents both pull-over and wrap-around filter styles as compatible. Blueair says its updated website CADR and room values may differ from packaging; do not silently substitute an older carton figure. Manual, pp. 2, 10–12; website note
Front-access alternative: Levoit Vital 200S-P
The Vital is worth considering when a front-facing service bay suits your furniture better than the Core's surrounding gap. Its manual specifies the 15-inch front clearance and a flat, stable surface such as the floor; troubleshooting also says to keep the front, sides and top unobstructed. That is not a wall-mounting instruction. Manual, pp. 7–8, 21
Levoit's page identifies the white/grey US model as LAP-V201S-WUS, rated 388 sq ft at 4.8 air changes per hour, with 250 CFM CADR not labelled by pollutant. Match the model suffix to your manual. See the Vital 200S-P at Levoit.
Bedroom layout: curtains, bedding and the cord
Use this Core 300S-P arrangement as a planning sketch. All sketches below are hypothetical top views, not to scale; they show access and obstructions, not simulated air paths or measured performance.
WINDOW / CURTAIN WALL
+------------------------------------+
| Curtain travel stays outside gap |
| +--------+ |
| open space | | |
|OUTLET..cord..[CORE] | BED | |
| open space | | |
| +--------+ |
| clear walking route |
+-- DOOR ----------------------------+
Measure from the housing to walls, furniture and curtains to preserve the Core's 15 in / 38 cm on all sides. Check with curtains drawn and bedding hanging as normally used. Keep the top outlet open. The manual says to keep the purifier near its outlet and the cord outside walking areas, never under furniture or rugs. Dots mark an exposed cord route, not permission to stretch it across a walkway. Core manual, pp. 4–7
Bed distance: choose a position that passes those checks and feels comfortable. The EPA advises redirecting airflow if it creates an uncomfortable draft; it supplies no universal pillow distance in that guidance. Compare room-appropriate options in quiet air purifiers for bedrooms.
Living-room layout: count the connected space
This 211i Max sketch leaves its surrounding intake accessible and its top uncovered.
+------------------------------------+
| +----------+ |
| | SOFA | open space |
| +----------+ [211i]..OUTLET|
| open space |
| |
| OPEN TO DINING / KITCHEN |
+ +
Keep at least 4 inches / 10 cm from obstacles, per Blueair's family placement guidance. Also leave working space to twist and lift the top for a filter change. The gap is an operating minimum, not a measurement of the handroom needed for maintenance. Use an outlet reachable by the supplied cord: the manual forbids extending it with a power strip or extension lead. Placement guidance; manual, pp. 3, 10–12
For an open plan, the EPA says to count the entire area served. Putting the purifier near a doorway does not prove that separate bedrooms receive the rated delivery. If the connected area exceeds the model's appropriate room rating, reconsider capacity or multiple units. Our air purifier buying guide covers broader model selection.
Desk or small-room layout: floor versus tabletop
Here the Mighty2 sits on the floor beside a desk, with front access and a right-side service lane.
+------------------------------------+
| OUTLET +-------------------+ |
| . | DESK | |
| . +-------------------+ |
| [MIGHTY2] right-side access |
| front open CHAIR |
| clear chair route |
+-- DOOR ----------------------------+
Apply Coway's firm, flat, dry surface and unobstructed-airflow rules; check that a pulled-out chair does not occupy the service lane. Its manual says to keep cords out of traffic areas and prohibits adapters and extension cords. Do not invent a numeric setback for this sketch. Manual, pp. 5, 7–8
Tabletop option: the Core manual permits a flat, stable surface, but a desk must still accommodate its 15-inch all-sides gap, open top outlet and access for turning it over. Check the furniture's load capacity before choosing it. A slot under a shelf, a crowded nightstand or the space behind a monitor should not be assumed suitable merely because the body fits. The EPA distinguishes floor and tabletop designs; height alone is not its placement test. Core manual; EPA
Buying advice: when a placement problem needs another model
Use the ledger before ordering. If you cannot preserve the clearances, try a different position or a different intake and service arrangement. Moving a large-room model into a hallway is not a substitute for sizing it to the intended area. For fur and pre-filter upkeep, see air purifiers for pets.
Mark the body and gaps
Compare the housing dimensions with the exact model's operating clearances.
Check moving obstructions
Include drawn curtains, bedding, doors and chairs in your layout.
Rehearse filter access
Allow the documented bottom, front, right-side or lift-off access before settling on a spot.
Check the usable fan setting
The EPA says CADR is typically measured at the highest speed; a lower setting filters less air.
Published minimum noise and maximum CADR are not a promise of simultaneous performance. Choose a room-appropriate purifier you can keep running at an acceptable setting, and follow its manual for filter unpacking, startup and controls. This page addresses placement rather than commissioning.
How we choose
These are document-based placement recommendations. We compared official US manuals, their printed document identifiers, current manufacturer specifications and EPA guidance, checked November 2, 2026. We have not physically evaluated these layouts or measured airflow or noise. The sketches apply documented clearances to hypothetical furniture arrangements.
CADR and room figures here are manufacturer publications. The AHAM directory did not expose model entries to the text fetch, so no independently checked directory values are asserted. Levoit's unlabelled CADRs stay unlabelled. Our general research policy is How we choose.
Verdict
Start with the room and the manual. Choose the Core 300S-P when its compact body and surrounding clearance both fit, the Mighty2 when right-side filter access remains practical, or the 211i Max for a suitably sized open living area. Consider the Vital 200S-P for its different front-clearance arrangement. Preserve airflow, maintenance access and a usable cord route whichever model you choose.
Frequently asked questions
Where should I put an air purifier in a bedroom?
Start with an unobstructed spot in the bedroom itself, on a surface the model's manual permits. Keep curtains, bedding and furniture outside its required clearance, and leave a cord route away from walking areas. The EPA advises redirecting airflow if it causes an uncomfortable draft. Use those checks to choose a position beside or beyond the bed; this guide does not set a universal distance from your pillow.
How far should an air purifier be from a wall?
Use the exact model's instructions. The cited US Core 300S-P manual requires at least 15 inches on all sides; the Vital 200S-P manual specifies 15 inches from the front. Blueair's Blue Pure Max placement guidance specifies at least 4 inches from obstacles. The cited Mighty2 manual gives obstruction rules without a numeric wall setback. A missing number is not permission to press a unit against furniture.
Should an air purifier be on the floor or a table?
The EPA says many units are designed for floors and some for tabletops. Follow the model's surface instructions: the Core 300S-P manual specifies a flat, stable surface, while the Vital manual gives the floor as an example. Consider a tabletop only if it supports the unit, accommodates every clearance and leaves the outlet open. Also plan how you will remove the filter.
Can one air purifier serve several rooms?
Size for the area it will actually serve. The EPA describes portable cleaners as serving a single room or area and says to consider the entire connected space in an open floor plan. A hallway position does not establish coverage for separate rooms. When the required area exceeds one model's capacity, consider multiple units rather than relying on a larger marketing coverage number without its air-change basis.
