About this guide

thisHUSH covers comfort, quiet and air-quality gear, not health. Nothing on this site is medical advice: for sleep, breathing or hearing concerns, talk to a doctor.

For a new Dyson air purifier and humidifier, choose the PH2 De-NOx White/Gold: its supplied K-Carbon filter, formaldehyde-specific sensing and MyDyson controls make it our default family pick. The PH04 White/Gold is the refurbished alternative to compare; consider PH03 for an older connected machine and PH3A Autoreact for remote-led operation only after checking condition and contents. Start with the exact model and finish with the filter and water-system order below.

Dyson's support directory lists these as separate families. A support entry establishes which instructions to use; check the actual product page for an orderable machine.

For the PH2, Dyson rates the full tank for up to 36 hours at fan speed 1 and recommends replacing HEPA+K-Carbon every 12 months, based on 12 hours' daily use, with actual life dependent on use and pollution.

  • 12 monthsPH2 HEPA+K-Carbon guidance at 12 hours of daily use

Best new purchase: PH2 De-NOx White/Gold

This is the straightforward starting point if you want the current combined machine and connected controls. The exact US White/Gold configuration is 544589-01; Nickel/Gold is 602848-01. Match the configuration as well as the family name when comparing bundles.

The White/Gold in-box list names the machine, combined HEPA+K-Carbon filter and magnetic remote. Its tank is described as one gallon. Keep the replacement filter separate from the catalytic filter, which Dyson says never needs replacing.

A maker inconsistency matters here: the PH2 page claims 50% more NO₂ adsorption, while the K-Carbon filter page also carries a footnote saying three times more NO₂. We give the upgrade no performance multiplier because those published claims conflict.

Best refurbished alternative: PH04 White/Gold

The PH04 adds a dedicated solid-state formaldehyde sensor and catalytic filter to the standard HEPA/carbon arrangement. Its new-product page showed out of stock, while Dyson's Certified Refurbished White/Gold page showed an available machine. Choose it only if the condition and terms suit you.

The refurbished box lists the machine, remote and Glass HEPA/activated-carbon filter. Dyson specifies a six-month parts-and-labor warranty for refurbished purifiers and humidifiers, and says Renewed sales are final. Include those terms in the comparison, especially for a gift.

Older connected alternative: PH03 White/Silver

The PH03 US page lists remote, MyDyson and compatible voice controls, with the Glass HEPA/activated-carbon filter and remote included. It showed out of stock. Check any other offer separately for stock and condition; a supported model is not automatically a current new purchase.

Its owner guide lists particle, VOC, NO₂, temperature and humidity screens, without the dedicated HCHO readout documented for PH04. The PH03 retail page also lists formaldehyde among household pollutants; we do not read that generic list as proof of a formaldehyde sensor or catalytic stage.

Remote-led alternative: PH3A Autoreact White/Nickel

Consider the PH3A if you intend to use a remote and the machine's LCD. Its dedicated guide documents automatic purification/humidification, remote airflow selection and a remote sleep timer. The US product page showed out of stock and lists a remote and Glass HEPA/activated-carbon filter in the box.

Do not buy it for promised app scheduling. Its retail page has a generic Wi-Fi/app footnote, but the model guide documents remote operation and Dyson's connected-machine list omits PH3A. Those pages are inconsistent. Require model-specific confirmation from Dyson before relying on a seller's connectivity claim.

Sensors, controls and room fit

Across the model guides, the useful everyday readouts are PM2.5, PM10, VOCs, NO₂, temperature and relative humidity. PH04 and PH2 additionally document a formaldehyde-specific readout. Check the named screen or sensor rather than assuming every pollutant in a marketing glossary is individually measured.

For a recipient who wants phone control, favor PH2 or a verified PH03/PH04 configuration. Older owner pages call the app Dyson Link; current product pages call it MyDyson. Include the working remote in any used or refurbished order, and verify app/device compatibility before gifting.

Dyson describes these as single-room machines; its PH2 guide asks for a few feet of clearance on every side, away from radiators and air vents. Night mode uses quieter settings and a dimmed display. We have no comparable low-speed sound measurements or smoke CADR figures in the cited model specifications, so we do not rank their noise or room-cleaning speed. For CADR-led alternatives, see our air purifier guide.

Two compatibility traps: the PH3A spares directory lists evaporator 970718-01, but that part's own compatibility list omits PH3A. Confirm it against the serial number before ordering. The standard-filter page also calls PH04 “Cryptomic,” whereas the model directory calls it “Formaldehyde”; use the PH04 code and matching support page when resolving that naming conflict.

K-Carbon compatibility is explicitly documented for all the families above. Replacing that consumable does not establish an upgrade to a machine's sensors, catalytic hardware or connectivity. Our recommendation for an existing PH04 is to investigate the listed replacement filter before replacing the whole machine solely for the supplied filter type.

Refilling, humidity and the recurring maintenance kit

The PH2 can run as a purifier fan with humidification switched off, and its Auto modes manage purification and humidity. Plan around the full tank's qualified runtime above and follow its refill prompt rather than assuming it will last an identical time at every setting.

For ongoing supplies, identify the air filter and have 150g of citric acid per prompted PH2 Deep clean cycle available. PH03/PH04/PH3A support also lists the branded Cleaning kit 970919-01. Buy an evaporator, tank or pump to replace a missing or damaged component after checking compatibility; the cited guides do not assign those parts an annual replacement schedule.

PH2 cleaning prompts depend on water hardness: monthly in hard-water areas, less often in softer water. Its guide specifies citric acid and points to the matching manual. The detailed PH04 instructions fill with cold water, dissolve the citric acid, put the evaporator in the tank, run the guided cycle, then rinse and reassemble. They explicitly require keeping the electrically connected tank cap dry. Follow your own model's sequence.

Black Friday and Cyber Monday: check the complete order

Compare the same model, finish, condition and included parts before deciding that an offer is better. In particular, compare a new PH2 with a refurbished PH04 only after accounting for the latter's shorter warranty and final-sale terms.

  1. Match the machine

Confirm the full family name, US configuration and condition.

  2. Check the box

Confirm the listed filter and working remote are included.

  3. Check the water system

Verify the tank, pump and evaporator; resolve the PH3A evaporator conflict before buying a spare.

  4. Read the condition terms

Dyson Renewed purifiers carry a six-month warranty and final-sale terms.

How we choose

This is document-based research, without physical product testing. We matched US product pages to model-specific owner guides, in-box lists and spare-part compatibility pages. Our preference for PH2 follows its current new-product availability and documented controls; older models are conditional alternatives. We expose conflicting maker claims instead of filling gaps with another generation's specifications.

Verdict

Choose PH2 De-NOx White/Gold for a new machine with K-Carbon and connected controls. Compare Dyson-refurbished PH04 White/Gold if you accept its condition and terms. Consider PH03 only against a verified older offer, and PH3A for remote operation with its connectivity caveat understood. Finish the order by checking the exact filter and water-system parts.

Frequently asked questions

Which Dyson air purifier and humidifier should I buy?

Choose the PH2 De-NOx White/Gold for a new US purchase: it includes the HEPA+K-Carbon filter and remote, with MyDyson control and a dedicated formaldehyde readout. Compare the PH04 White/Gold if you accept Dyson Certified Refurbished condition and its shorter warranty. PH03 and PH3A are older alternatives whose new-product pages showed out of stock when checked; verify any offer separately.

Does the Dyson PH3A Autoreact work with the app?

Buy it for remote and LCD operation. Its model-specific guide documents remote controls, and Dyson's connected-machine list omits PH3A. The retail page nevertheless carries a generic app and Wi-Fi footnote, so the maker's pages conflict. We would not choose it for app schedules or promise connectivity to a gift recipient without model-specific confirmation from Dyson.

Can I use the K-Carbon filter in a PH03 or PH04?

Yes. Dyson's US compatibility list for K-Carbon part 974527-01 explicitly includes PH03, PH04, PH3A and PH2 De-NOx. That establishes replacement-filter compatibility. It does not establish that changing the consumable adds a formaldehyde sensor, catalytic hardware or app connection. Keep the machine's original model identity and buy the filter against that exact compatibility list.

How often do Dyson purifier-humidifiers need cleaning?

Follow the machine's Deep clean prompt. The PH2 owner guide says prompts come monthly in hard-water areas and less often with softer water, and specifies 150g of citric acid. This is separate from its HEPA+K-Carbon replacement guidance of every 12 months based on 12 hours of daily use. The evaporator and air filter have different maintenance jobs; follow the matching model instructions.

Is the Dyson Humidify+Cool an air conditioner?

No. Dyson specifies that Cool describes fan airflow, not an air-conditioning unit. The PH2 can operate as a purifier fan with humidification off; when both Auto modes are selected it also manages humidity. Choose it for those combined functions and assess any room-cooling need separately.
