About this guide
thisHUSH covers comfort, quiet and air-quality gear, not health. Nothing on this site is medical advice: for sleep, breathing or hearing concerns, talk to a doctor.
Choose the Levoit Superior Studio Smart 450S if you will wash its reusable wick and want app schedules, a top-fill tank and dishwasher-safe tank parts. Choose the Vornado EV100 if you prefer button controls and replacing a disposable wick in a smaller room. Our preference between these two is Levoit for its cleaning options and controls, conditional on doing the wick care.
Both are evaporative humidifiers. EPA explains that this mechanism uses a fan and wet absorbent material to release invisible moisture, with substantial mineral dispersal not expected. For other mechanisms and a wider shortlist of the best evaporative humidifiers, start with our parent guide.
Quick picks and comparison
- Choose Studio Smart: you want reusable-wick maintenance, app scheduling and a tank that can go in the dishwasher.
- Choose EV100: you want local humidity buttons and a replacement-wick routine.
- Choose neither solely for a noise number: the available official specifications cannot establish a comparable quietest pick.
The figures below come from Levoit's specifications, its US manual, Vornado's page and EV100 manual. Coverage is each maker's claim.

Best for washable wicks and app controls: Levoit Studio Smart 450S
Levoit is our pick if you prefer laundering a wick to regularly throwing one away. The maker includes a pre-installed wick and permits tap water; the replacement-wick page explicitly lists Studio Smart 450S compatibility. Washable does not mean permanent: its long-life claim has conditions, explained below.
You can run it without setting up the app. The manual lists local Low, Medium, High and Auto settings. Auto uses the humidity sensor to adjust fan speed and defaults to a 50% target without VeSync. Sleep Mode uses Low and switches the display off. VeSync adds a custom target of 30–80%, schedules and remote controls; setup requires a secure 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network. The broad adjustment range is not a suggested indoor humidity range.
There is also a sound-related catch: turning it off can start a drying cycle. Automatic Dry Mode runs after power-off, an empty tank or descaling; it can be disabled in VeSync. Plan for that fan behavior if immediate silence matters. The manual says settings are remembered even after unplugging.

Best for local buttons and replacement wicks: Vornado EV100
The EV100 is our choice for someone who wants to select humidity on the appliance and keep spare wicks. Vornado lists up to 260 sq ft of coverage and a one-gallon tank. Its tank lifts out and turns upside down for cap access; Levoit instructs pouring water through the grille after switching off.
The owner's guide gives High, Low and Auto fan modes. High and Low stop the fan when the chosen humidity is reached; Auto varies between High, Low and off. Humidity settings run from 40–60%, plus Continuous. Continuous works with High or Low and disables Auto.
A restart detail matters if you expect yesterday's quiet setting: the manual says fan speed defaults to High when switched back on. The humidity setting is retained after power-off, but unplugging resets it to High and 50%. Check the fan setting when restarting rather than assuming Low persists.

Studio, Studio Smart and replacement listings
Levoit's Studio 450 is the non-smart model; the comparison here covers Studio Smart 450S. Levoit's series comparison gives both the same core evaporative performance and on-device controls. Smart adds app monitoring, remote control, scheduling and cleaning reminders. Choose Smart for those functions rather than assuming the name promises greater output.
The consumables have their own listings:
- Levoit Studio Series 450/450S replacement filter: one washable wick, explicitly compatible with both models. This is an accessory, not the humidifier.
- Vornado MD1-0034, two-pack: two replacement wicks. Vornado's model cross-reference says the EV100 / HU1-0048-43 takes one at a time, so the pack includes a spare.
Output and runtime: read the conditions first
Levoit specifies 400 mL/h ±15% maximum output and 40 hours ±10% runtime on Low, with runtime depending on temperature and humidity. Its page calls output “Max Mist Output,” although the mechanism produces invisible vapor. The maximum output and low-speed runtime are separate ratings; don't expect both together.
Vornado's manual specifies one gallon ±10% in 24 hours, assuming continuous High operation at 70°F and 30% relative humidity. Its product page's one-gallon daily-output headline omits those details. This is not a separate guaranteed all-settings runtime claim.
These figures do not support a direct performance ratio. Levoit does not state matching temperature and humidity conditions for its output figure. Vornado also explains that a humidistat-controlled unit will not continuously run at maximum output in normal changing conditions. Use the numbers to understand the rating, then judge whether the room reaches your chosen humidity.
Cleaning: what goes where
Levoit's manual, Care & Maintenance, is more useful here than a broad “easy clean” label. Unplug first, then remove the wick and water pump before loading the permitted parts. Vornado's manual cleaning section also starts with unplugging, then describes hand-cleaning its base and tank.

Levoit asks for tank cleaning every three days. Its Descaling Mode uses citric acid to remove scale; it is a maintenance step, not a substitute for removing parts and washing the tank or wick.
The wick-care discrepancy worth knowing before buying
Levoit's unit and replacement-filter pages condition up to two years of wick life on one wash per week. The unit FAQ and manual instead instruct cleaning the wick every two weeks. Those are different schedules; neither supports promising two years of use with fortnightly washing.
Vornado's replacement model is more straightforward: the manual gives approximately 4–8 weeks, depending on use, water hardness and environmental factors. Replace a wick when it becomes hard and no longer absorbs effectively. The accessory page calls the wicks disposable; the manual's limited vinegar soak for first-use odor is not a machine-washing instruction. Hard or chemically softened water can shorten useful wick life.
Neither routine excuses leaving old water in the tank. EPA's portable-humidifier guidance recommends emptying, drying and refilling daily, plus cleaning every third day. That daily water routine is more frequent than Levoit's manual instruction to change water every three days. We recommend the EPA daily routine, alongside the model's separate tank, pump and wick instructions.
Room fit, quietness and white dust
For a smaller enclosed room, EV100's claimed coverage may be sufficient; Levoit's larger coverage claim makes it the stronger candidate on paper as room size increases. Neither coverage figure proves equal humidity throughout an open floor plan. Check the room with a hygrometer instead of treating the advertised square footage as a guarantee; our indoor humidity and hygrometers guide explains the next step.
For a quiet humidifier, the evidence is incomplete. Levoit publishes 19–45 dB measured 1.5 m away. Neither the checked EV100 page nor its manual supplies a numerical noise rating. Low and Sleep mode descriptions cannot establish a measured winner, and Levoit's lowest endpoint does not describe every speed or the drying cycle. Choose by controls and maintenance, rather than a claim that one is proven quieter.
For humidity, EPA says not to exceed 50%. If condensation forms on windows or walls, lower the setting or reduce use. Both machines allow targets above that ceiling, so an available setting is not a recommendation.
For humidifier white dust, the key trade is where minerals remain. Levoit says minerals stay in its wick; Vornado explains that buildup makes wicks less efficient. Evaporation reduces the mineral-dispersal concern, while retaining the wick-care commitment.
- Yes: Reusing the wick matters: choose Studio Smart and commit to washing
- Yes: Replacing the wick suits your routine: choose EV100 and keep spares
- Partly: Quietness decides everything: the official noise evidence is insufficient for a winner
Before you order
Both makers had complete-unit and compatible replacement-wick pages with order controls at our check. Recheck the accessory listing alongside the humidifier; a long-life claim is not a promise of future parts availability.
Choose the control version
Levoit Studio Smart 450S adds app features; Studio 450 is the non-smart alternative.
Separate appliance from accessory
Studio Series replacement filter and Vornado MD1-0034 listings are wick accessories.
Check the wick fit and pack
Levoit names Studio 450/450S; the Vornado two-pack supplies an EV100 with one wick plus a spare.
How we choose
This is a research comparison, with no physical product testing. We checked manufacturer product pages, the exact US manuals, the Studio model comparison and official replacement-part fit. For tank care and humidity limits, we consulted EPA guidance. The scanned Levoit manual's control and cleaning pages were also checked visually against the extracted text.
We leave the EV100 noise figure unknown, preserve Levoit's conflicting care schedules and avoid converting unlike output conditions into a performance ranking. Product and accessory identities are kept separate. Links go to the makers while Amazon listing identifiers await owner confirmation. Verdict
Buy Studio Smart 450S for its washable wick, dishwasher cleaning options and app control, provided regular washing fits your routine. Buy EV100 for a smaller room and local humidity settings with disposable-wick replacement. The maintenance commitment is the deciding difference; the published noise evidence cannot name a quietest winner.

Frequently asked questions
Which is better: Levoit Studio Smart or Vornado EV100?
Choose Studio Smart 450S if you want a machine-washable wick, dishwasher-safe tank and frames, and app schedules. Choose EV100 if you prefer local buttons and replacing a disposable wick. Levoit claims coverage of 600 sq ft; Vornado claims up to 260 sq ft. These are manufacturer sizing claims, and the published evidence does not establish which machine is quieter in the same room.
Does the Levoit Studio Smart need Wi-Fi or the VeSync app?
Its manual describes local Low, Medium, High, Auto and Sleep controls, so app setup is unnecessary for basic operation. Auto defaults to a 50% target without VeSync. The app lets you change that target from 30–80%, create schedules and control the unit remotely. App setup requires a secure 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network. Read the adjustment range as a control specification, rather than a recommendation to use the highest setting.
Can you wash the Vornado EV100 wick like the Levoit wick?
Do not transfer Levoit's washing-machine instructions to Vornado. Vornado describes MD1-0034 wicks as disposable, with replacement every 4–8 weeks depending on use. Its EV100 manual describes a vinegar soak for an unusually strong first-use odor and says not to wring the wick. That limited procedure does not establish machine-washability or the multi-year reuse claimed for Levoit's different wick.
Will either evaporative humidifier leave white dust?
EPA says evaporative humidifiers are not expected to disperse substantial amounts of minerals. Levoit says tap-water minerals remain in its wick, while Vornado explains that accumulated minerals can make wicks less effective. Expect invisible water vapor rather than a visible mist plume. Avoiding mineral dust on furniture still leaves a tank and wick to maintain; it does not make either machine maintenance-free.
