About this guide

thisHUSH covers comfort, quiet and air-quality gear, not health. Nothing on this site is medical advice: for sleep, breathing or hearing concerns, talk to a doctor.

For a smaller room, our default air purifier for wildfire smoke is the Coway Airmega Mighty2 AP-1512N: Coway publishes smoke CADR 240, and CARB lists it as mechanical. For more airflow without an electronic cleaning stage, consider the Coway Airmega ProX, with published smoke CADR 568 and a mechanical CARB listing for the white AP-3522F(W).

Size for wildfire smoke, not the largest area on the box. AHAM recommends smoke CADR equal to the room's area in square feet for wildfire smoke; its guidance assumes an eight-foot ceiling, with larger units needed for higher ceilings. That gives planning ceilings of 240 sq ft for Mighty2 and 568 sq ft for ProX, calculated by applying that rule to the maker's CADRs. These are selection targets, not guaranteed room outcomes.

Official specifications, filter pages and CARB entries checked November 2, 2026. CADRs below are manufacturer claims; model-level AHAM directory verification remains unconfirmed.

The wildfire column applies AHAM's rule; it is not a maker's room rating. The HH's published CADR is not identified as an ionizer-off result, so its row does not establish that capacity with the ionizer disabled. Sources: Coway Mighty2, ProX, Blueair, original Mighty, Levoit and CARB's model list.

The electronics caveat matters: EPA's wildfire filtration guidance recommends mechanical filtration and does not recommend electronic air cleaners for smoke removal. CARB certification addresses electrical safety and ozone emissions; CARB explicitly says it does not evaluate pollutant-removal effectiveness. That is why the Blueair's higher CADR does not make it our default over Mighty2.

Why no Vital smoke ranking? Levoit's exact US page labels its figure simply “CADR: 250 CFM,” without identifying the pollutant. We leave smoke CADR unknown rather than convert a generic CADR into a confirmed smoke rating. Its “Smoke Remover” replacement-filter option does not resolve that missing specification.

Best mechanical default: Coway Airmega Mighty2 AP-1512N

Coway Airmega Mighty2 AP-1512N Air Purifier (White)

Coway

Coway Airmega Mighty2 AP-1512N

The 2026 successor to Coway's Mighty: smoke CADR 240, a side-access pre-filter plus a combined carbon and HEPA filter, a PM1/2.5/10 laser sensor, and a purely mechanical design with no ionizer.

Check package and model options

  • 240 CFM smoke CADR
  • Removable pre-filter + Max2 filter (activated carbon + HEPA)
  • 19 dB lowest setting

Choose Mighty2 when its wildfire sizing target fits your room. Coway specifies a washable pre-filter plus a Max2 filter combining activated carbon and HEPA, with a laser sensor reading PM1, PM2.5 and PM10. CARB's AP-1512N and white AP-1512N(W) entries are mechanical, meaning physical filtration without ozone or ion generation.

Coway lists a 19–50 dB noise range, but gives no smoke CADR alongside the quietest setting in the cited specifications. Do not pair the lowest noise figure with maximum airflow. The manual says Turbo moves more air than the manual speed levels; for smoke, start with EPA's advice to run continuously on the highest setting you can use.

Version check: buy full-size AP-1512N, not the separately named Mighty2 Mini or older AP-1512HH. Coway's Mighty2 replacement page has a separate Mini selector and filter choices including Intense Smoke+. No higher smoke CADR is established for that optional filter in the cited page.

Best larger mechanical option: Coway Airmega ProX

The ProX is the step up when Mighty2's target is too small: Coway publishes 568 smoke CADR, and CARB lists white AP-3522F(W) as mechanical. Its advertised 4,253 sq ft is a once-per-hour figure, not the wildfire target in our table.

The trade-off is physical size: Coway specifies 51 lb and 18.9 × 36.6 × 24.3 inches. Measure the intended position before buying. Its published noise range is 23–46 dB(A); this is a maker's range, not a comparison measured under the same conditions as the other units.

The ProX replacement set explicitly contains two Max2 filters. Match the whole set to ProX rather than buying a generic “Max2” accessory. The purifier page offers White, Mocha Beige and Graphite; this recommendation and the new product record cover the white US model.

Electronic alternative: Blueair Blue Pure 211i Max

Blueair Blue Pure 211i Max Air Purifier

Blueair

Blueair Blue Pure 211i Max

A large-room purifier with a 360-degree intake, a washable fabric pre-filter, PM1/PM2.5/PM10 sensing and app control, rated by Blueair at smoke CADR 435 and 674 sq ft.

Check package and model options

  • 435 CFM smoke CADR
  • 674 sq ft room
  • Washable fabric pre-filter + particle and carbon filter (HEPASilent: mechanical plus electrostatic)
  • 23 dB lowest setting

Blueair publishes 435 smoke CADR and describes HEPASilent as combined mechanical and electrostatic filtration. CARB lists model 3613111100 as electronic. Consider it with that design distinction in view; for a new smoke-focused purchase, we favor the mechanical choices above because of EPA's guidance.

The standard purifier includes a Particle & Carbon filter. Optional SmokeBlock for 211i Max uses twice the activated carbon of Blueair's original filter, according to Blueair; that relative claim supplies neither an absolute carbon mass nor a gas-removal CADR. Do not assume the purifier's published CADR increases with the filter change.

Version check: match “211i Max” on the purifier and replacement filter. Blueair says its CADR and room figures were updated for DOE standards, so older packaging can differ from the current website. Use the current published figure here, and resolve a mismatched box before ordering.

Existing-owner option: Coway Mighty AP-1512HH

Coway Airmega Mighty AP-1512HH Air Purifier (White)

Coway

Coway Airmega Mighty AP-1512HH

Coway's long-running mid-size purifier: smoke CADR 233 with a washable pre-filter, carbon deodorization filter and HEPA filter, a particle sensor with auto mode, and a switchable ionizer.

Check package and model options

  • 233 CFM smoke CADR
  • 361 sq ft room
  • Washable pre-filter + carbon deodorization filter + HEPA; switchable ionizer
  • 24 dB lowest setting

If you already own the original Mighty, check its filters and controls before replacing the whole purifier. Coway publishes 233 smoke CADR, and its manual gives the ionizer an on/off button. CARB classifies the HH as electronic; disabling its ionizer does not provide a separately verified smoke CADR.

Its replacement schedules are six months for deodorization and one year for HEPA, subject to operating conditions. Coway's AP-1512HH/200M replacement page describes one HEPA filter and two deodorization filters in the set. That is different from Mighty2's combined Max2 system. Also avoid Eco during continuous smoke filtration: Coway says it stops the fan after 30 minutes without detected pollution.

Buying guide: smoke particles, gases and usable airflow

What is CADR? Clean Air Delivery Rate is the volume of filtered air delivered, with separate tobacco-smoke, pollen and dust ratings. It rates particle filtration, not gas removal, and EPA says it is typically measured at maximum speed. A HEPA label alone does not tell you the amount of filtered air delivered.

AHAM's ordinary sizing rule asks for smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of room area; its wildfire guidance asks for equal numerical values. Measure length × width, include connected open space, and allow for taller ceilings. If noise makes you reduce speed, maximum CADR no longer establishes the room capacity at that setting. See what CADR means and our air purifier placement guide.

Carbon has limits. EPA's air-cleaner guide says activated carbon can filter gases when enough material is present, but no cleaner removes every pollutant and gas filters lack a widely used performance rating. Do not rely on these purifiers for carbon monoxide: EPA's technical summary says it is not readily captured by adsorption or chemisorption. An odor claim or a smoke-themed filter name is not proof of all-gas removal.

Prepare the room and check replacements

EPA recommends choosing filtration before smoke arrives, when equipment may become difficult to obtain. Its clean-room guidance says heavy smoke can require more frequent filter replacement than the normal maker interval. Identify an exact spare now; do not interpret a filter-life estimate as a promise for a smoke event.

Those are documentation differences, not interchangeable promises. Before using a new Mighty2 or ProX, remove the filters' plastic wrapping as the manuals direct. Follow each maker's separate pre-filter and main-filter instructions.

EPA's room setup is to choose a room everyone can use, keep airflow unobstructed, close doors and windows when safe, and avoid indoor particle sources such as candles and frying. Run the cleaner continuously at the highest usable setting and inspect filters often, changing them when dirty or releasing smoke odors.

Prepare before smoke arrives
  1. Choose the room

Measure the space and apply the wildfire sizing rule above.

  2. Match the filter

Identify the exact replacement and remove shipping wrapping before operation.

  3. Set up airflow

Keep intakes and outlets clear; close doors and windows when safe.

  4. Keep checking

Run continuously at the highest usable setting and inspect filters frequently.

Follow EPA's current clean-room guidance and local alerts for the event itself. EPA says a power outage, excessive indoor heat or smoke still entering can mean seeking shelter elsewhere; a purifier purchase does not override evacuation instructions.

When to consider a Corsi-Rosenthal box

If a commercial unit is unavailable or unaffordable, EPA's DIY instructions describe a temporary alternative. Its cube design uses four or five furnace filters, a box fan and a shroud. EPA recommends MERV 13 filters and a UL- or ETL-marked fan made in 2012 or later; seal gaps and orient filter arrows with airflow. Follow the full instructions, including no extension cord and no damaged fan.

EPA finds that construction, fan and filter choices affect performance, so a published result for one box does not establish your box's CADR. We assign no room rating or affiliate kit to this alternative. EPA prefers commercial units with known performance and does not recommend DIY as their permanent replacement.

How we choose

We prioritize documented smoke CADR, exact-model CARB entries, mechanical filtration and identifiable replacement filters. Selections come from official specifications and manuals, rather than physical product testing. We distinguish maximum ratings from unknown quiet-mode performance and keep Levoit's unlabeled CADR out of the smoke ranking.

The AHAM directory did not expose model rows in the fetched text, so we do not claim independently confirmed AHAM listings. Sources are linked beside the relevant decisions, with saved quotations in the accompanying source manifest. For other everyday-use choices, see our general air purifier guide and selection method.

Verdict

Start with Mighty2 when its wildfire sizing target fits; choose ProX for more mechanical-filtration airflow. Regard Blueair's electronic stage as a substantive buying distinction, and check the original Mighty's ionizer and filters if you already own it. Choose the room, operating speed and exact spare filter together.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best air purifier for wildfire smoke?

Our default is the Coway Mighty2 for a smaller room: Coway publishes smoke CADR 240 and CARB lists it as mechanical. For a larger room, consider the mechanical ProX, with published smoke CADR 568. Applying AHAM's wildfire rule gives planning ceilings of 240 and 568 square feet respectively, assuming an eight-foot ceiling; these are sizing targets, not guarantees.

What is CADR, and how much do I need for smoke?

Clean Air Delivery Rate measures the volume of filtered air delivered, with separate tobacco-smoke, dust and pollen ratings. For wildfire smoke, AHAM recommends smoke CADR equal to the room's area in square feet. That is more demanding than its ordinary two-thirds rule. Higher ceilings call for a larger unit, and a maximum-speed rating does not establish performance in a quieter mode.

Will a HEPA purifier remove smoke smells and carbon monoxide?

Particle filters address airborne particles; gases need different filtration. EPA says activated carbon can filter gases when enough material is present, but CADR rates particles only and no cleaner removes every pollutant. Do not rely on a purifier for carbon monoxide: EPA says it is not readily captured by adsorption or chemisorption. A smoke filter name does not establish all-gas removal.

Is a Corsi-Rosenthal box a useful alternative?

EPA describes a cube made from a box fan and four or five furnace filters as a DIY option. Its performance depends on the fan, filters, construction and maintenance. EPA recommends DIY cleaners as a temporary alternative when commercial products of known performance are unavailable or unaffordable. Follow its full instructions, including MERV 13 filters and a UL- or ETL-marked fan made in 2012 or later.

How often should I change a filter during wildfire smoke?

Check it frequently rather than waiting only for the normal calendar interval. EPA advises planning more frequent replacement during heavy smoke and checking for dirt or smoke odors. Follow the maker's care instructions for each filter stage; a washable pre-filter does not make the main filter washable. Have the exact replacement identified before smoke arrives.
