About this guide

thisHUSH covers comfort, quiet and air-quality gear, not health. Nothing on this site is medical advice: for sleep, breathing or hearing concerns, talk to a doctor.

Choose the Dreo HM311S for cool mist with a 4L tank and Auto humidity control; it is our default choice between these two. Choose the HM713S if you specifically want warm mist or its larger 6L tank, and accept the heater's extra power and cleaning work.

Check the label first: this comparison covers the original US HM311S DR-HHM001S and HM713S DR-HHM003S. Dreo separately documents a 311S second generation, DR-HHM021S; its instructions are not interchangeable with the original's. Dreo's original 311S support, 713S support and second-generation support identify each version.

Best cool-mist choice: Dreo HM311S

The original HM311S makes sense if your shopping list says “humidifier with humidistat.” Its Auto button sets a humidity target on the appliance; you do not need to choose the larger machine just to get automatic control. Manual mode offers low, medium and high mist, and the ambient-light button also controls beep sounds, according to its US manual.

Its 4L tank is the smaller refill load here. Dreo's support description also lists app timers and ambient-light adjustment. The limitation: the original smart model's control panel has no dedicated Sleep button; do not transfer the basic HM311's Sleep-button instructions to it.

Best for warm mist: Dreo HM713S

The HM713S earns its place when you will use its heating option. Its physical controls include Auto, manual mist, warm mist, Sleep and a timer, so the app is not your only way to operate it. The US manual says warm mist is on by default: check that setting if you intended to run cool mist.

Sleep Mode switches to low mist and turns warm mist and the humidity indicator light off. You can switch warm mist back on afterward. That makes “warm mist all night” and “press Sleep and leave it” different routines. The 6L reservoir is attractive if carrying more water is acceptable; heating adds components to the cleaning routine.

The original HM311S uses a five-second Auto-button hold for pairing; HM713S uses a five-second Timer-button hold. Those are good reasons to follow the manual matching the label, rather than a generic “Dreo humidifier” tutorial. Auto humidity: a target, not just an output level

Both smart manuals say Auto adjusts mist level according to the target humidity. That is a different instruction from selecting low, medium or high output yourself. The original HM311S manual permits 30–90%; the HM713S US manual repeatedly specifies 30–80%. However, Dreo's current HM713S product page advertises Auto targets of 30–90%, so verify the documentation supplied with your exact unit. Both manuals describe 5% steps. That adjustment interval does not establish sensor accuracy.

Use the reading to check the room, rather than treating the highest selectable target as a goal. Dreo advises directing the mist away from the humidity sensor near the aroma tray. Its support pages say to reduce output or stop the machine if condensation forms around it or on windows. A separate room reading can be useful; see indoor humidity and hygrometers.

Which is the quiet humidifier?

Dreo advertises noise down to 28dB for the original HM311S in its support-page description. That number does not establish how it compares with the HM713S at equal moisture output.

The stronger buying clue is the HM713S manual's explanation that Sleep Mode turns heating off to reduce noise. If quiet operation is your priority, start with the mode you actually intend to use: cool mist, low output and lights handled appropriately. We cannot name an acoustic winner from these documents. For either model, Dreo's troubleshooting advice says to lower the mist level for unusual noise and avoid placing it directly on carpet, which can obstruct the air inlet.

Warm mist: power, placement and conflicting temperature claims

The US manuals rate HM311S at 26W and HM713S at 26W cool or 280W warm. These are rated inputs, not measured electricity consumption. They make the decision clear: select the heater because you want warm mist, and allow for substantially more electricity while it operates. Running the HM713S in cool mode uses the same published power rating as the smaller model.

Rated electrical input by operating mode
  • HM311S cool26W
  • HM713S cool26W
  • HM713S warm280W

Source: Dreo US manuals; ratings, not measured consumption

Both US manuals specify 120V, 60Hz power and placement 2 feet above the floor, 12 inches from walls or wooden furniture. Direct mist away from furniture and electrical appliances. The HM713S manual warns against putting exposed skin over its nozzles in warm mode and cautions that reservoir water may remain hot during refilling.

Dreo's temperature claims conflict: the HM713S manual lists warm settings of 113°F, 124°F and 133°F, while its support FAQ describes 113–130°F. Regard those as inconsistent manufacturer claims, not a verified temperature guarantee.

Tank handling, water and the cleaning commitment

Both designs fill from above: their manuals show removing the cover and filling to the MAX line. The HM713S diagram also identifies a tank handle. Choose by the route from your sink to the machine, not tank capacity alone.

Water alone weighs roughly four kilograms in the 4L tank and six kilograms in the 6L tank, before adding the container. That is our calculation using the capacities and the USGS approximation of one gram per milliliter, not a manufacturer carrying-weight specification. Consider filling in place with a pitcher if carrying the larger load is awkward.

Dreo recommends purified or distilled water for both models. Neither is a “no parts to maintain” answer to a search for the best humidifier without filter: both manuals identify a water filter. The HM713S additionally has a heater absorption pad; Dreo says it can be reused after cleaning but recommends regular replacement without giving a fixed interval there.

The manuals label their deeper cleaning procedure once a month and aroma-tray cleaning once a week. Routine refill instructions also include draining remaining water, rinsing the tank and wiping the base. The HM713S adds a removable mist tube, hot/cold mixer and noise silencer to handle.

Plan the cleaning before choosing the larger model
  1. Unplug and empty

Follow the model's refill instructions; take care with water left after warm operation.

  2. Follow the matching manual

The tank procedure uses a bleach solution; HM713S separately describes a vinegar-and-water soak for removed parts.

  3. Rinse, dry and reassemble

Follow the manual's rinse instructions and reinstall the filter, float and mist components correctly.

Keep the cleaning solutions separate; never mix bleach with other cleaners. Use the linked model-specific procedures for quantities and sequencing. If this routine is more than you want, compare other approaches in our humidifier shortlist and evaporative versus ultrasonic guide.

Which exact US kit should you order?

During holiday promotions, check the full model number, generation and included accessories before comparing offers. The original HM311S manual lists a cleaning brush and two aroma pads; HM713S lists a brush and three aroma pads. Check whether any separately pictured cartridge or replacement pad is actually included, and confirm compatibility with your model before adding it.

For an app-averse recipient, the HM713S's physical Sleep, timer and warm-mist buttons may be the more useful distinction than voice control. Both smart manuals put account sign-in and Bluetooth permission in the app-pairing sequence; a Dreo account is required for voice assistants. Their physical operation instructions are separate from that setup.

How we choose

This is document research, with no physical or acoustic testing. We compared Dreo's model-specific US manuals and support records, separated basic, smart and second-generation versions, and prioritized controls, refill handling, maintenance and heater power. The water-weight calculation is labeled; sound claims remain manufacturer claims. Dreo's source pages and manual links were checked November 2, 2026. Our research method explains the wider approach.

Verdict

Get the original HM311S if you want cool mist with a local humidity target and the smaller refill load. Get the HM713S if warm mist, its larger tank or its physical Sleep and timer controls justify the extra maintenance for you. Automatic humidity control is available on both; warm mode's power requirement and Sleep Mode's heater behavior are the reasons to think carefully about the upgrade.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Dreo HM311 and HM311S?

For the original US models, HM311 is DR-HHM001 and HM311S is DR-HHM001S. The basic HM311 manual lists manual mist levels and Sleep Mode; the smart HM311S adds app connectivity and an Auto humidity target. Do not apply that distinction to HM713: its basic version already has Auto Mode. Dreo also documents a separate HM311S second generation, DR-HHM021S, so check the full model number.

Can the HM311S and HM713S work without Wi-Fi?

Their US manuals provide physical power, mist-level and Auto humidity controls independently of the app-pairing instructions. The HM713S also has local warm-mist, Sleep and timer buttons. App setup requires signing in or creating an account and enabling Bluetooth on the phone during pairing. Voice-assistant setup goes through the Dreo app and requires a Dreo account. Choose by the local controls you will actually use.

Is the HM713S warm-mist upgrade worth it?

Choose it if you specifically want warm mist or its larger reservoir. Its US manual specifies a 6L tank and rated power of 26W in cool mode versus 280W in warm mode. Sleep Mode initially switches heating off, although you can turn it back on. The extra heater, absorption pad and removable mist components also deserve attention during cleaning; Auto humidity control alone is not a reason to upgrade from the HM311S.

Are these Dreo humidifiers filter-free?

Do not interpret that phrase as having no parts to clean or replace. Both US manuals show an internal water filter. The HM713S also has mineral-absorption pads around its heater; Dreo says they can be reused after cleaning but recommends regular replacement. Both models call for purified or distilled water and regular cleaning. Check the exact model and included accessories before ordering any replacement cartridge or pad.
