About this guide

thisHUSH covers comfort, quiet and air-quality gear, not health. Nothing on this site is medical advice: for sleep, breathing or hearing concerns, talk to a doctor.

The Yogasleep Dohm Classic is our default pick for simple controls: two fan speeds, adjustable tone, and no app, timer or night light. Choose the Dohm Nova if you would use its ten fan speeds, adjustable amber light or optional timer. If your Classic already makes the fan sound you want, our advice is to keep it until you need one of those additions.

Quick picks

  • Choose Classic for a straightforward setup. Select low or high speed, then adjust its cap and collar by hand.
  • Choose Nova for more adjustment and an optional light. It adds ten fan speeds, an independently controlled amber night light and a timer.
  • Keep a working Classic for continuous fan sound. Upgrading makes sense when a particular Nova feature solves an inconvenience you have now.

The numbers describe fan speeds, not libraries of recordings: Classic has two and Nova has ten. Both generate their sound with a real internal fan, according to Yogasleep's Classic page and Nova page.

  • 2Classic fan speeds: low and high
  • 10Nova fan speeds; the same mechanical fan produces the sound

Best for simple controls: Yogasleep Dohm Classic

Classic suits someone who wants to choose a sound by hand and leave the controls alone. Its switch selects low or high fan speed. Yogasleep explains the adjustments separately: rotating the cap changes volume, while rotating the collar changes tone from a lower hum to a brighter rush of air.

Yogasleep Dohm Classic Fan-Based Sound Machine (White)

Yogasleep

Yogasleep Dohm Classic

Yogasleep's original fan-based sound machine: a real fan motor inside an adjustable housing makes a steady, non-looping rush of air, with two speeds, a rotating cap for volume and a collar for tone.

Check package and model options

Choose a speed first, then make small cap and collar adjustments. Two speeds do not mean only two possible sounds: the housing adjustments give you another way to shape what you hear. That is why we would try adjusting an existing Classic before replacing it just to obtain a different tone.

The limitation is its feature list. Yogasleep's comparison table gives Classic no timer, night light or app control. That makes it our recommendation for someone who wants continuous fan sound and prefers to avoid extra buttons. If you specifically want the machine to switch itself off after a chosen interval, choose Nova.

Best for more controls and a light: Yogasleep Dohm Nova

Nova is the upgrade to choose for a feature you can name: more fan-speed settings, a dimmable amber light or a built-in timer. Yogasleep lists ten fan speeds and tone adjustment. Those additional speed choices are a reason to consider it if Classic's low/high choice feels too coarse for your preferences; they are not evidence that you will prefer its sound.

The light has its own control. Yogasleep says to press the Light button to toggle it and hold the button to change brightness. The maker also describes it as independent from the sound controls, so you can use the fan without lighting the room.

Nova also has a removable fabric cover, described as machine-washable on the product page. Its practical appeal is the added controls and cover, rather than a new catalogue of sounds: Yogasleep says every speed uses the same mechanical fan.

See Dohm Nova and its included power cable at Yogasleep.

Timer, light and memory: what to expect

Nova's timer instructions give this cycle: 45 minutes, 90 minutes, 8 hours, then deactivated. Yogasleep says the device automatically turns off after the selected duration. Leave the timer deactivated for continuous operation.

An interval timer is useful if you want an automatic stop after starting the machine yourself. Do not buy it expecting a programmable start time: the documented control is an elapsed-time selection. Likewise, the published timer description does not specify that the light remains on after the device turns off.

Memory remains unverified. We could not verify the exact full manuals through the accessible official sources, so we make no promise about Nova retaining speed, brightness or timer preferences after switching off or unplugging. Check those separate behaviors with Yogasleep if saved settings or operation after a power interruption are central to your purchase. An adjustable light and timer do not, by themselves, document those behaviors.

Which Dohm version are you ordering?

The names matter. Yogasleep's family table lists Dohm Uno with one speed, Dohm Classic and plain Dohm with two, and Nova with ten. App control belongs to Dohm Connect in that table; it is not a Nova feature. A listing headed only “Dohm” needs a closer look before you assume it is either model compared here.

For an exact retail check, the current US Nova listing identifies SKU 4001310. The White Classic is SKU 3500350. Classic's listed finish choices are White, Gray, Black, Tan and Pink; the product's two-speed specification applies across those choices. Match the model and region before choosing the finish.

Buying guide: power, placement and cleaning

    Check the complete power connection

Classic's product FAQ lists the machine and a seven-foot 120V AC cable. Yogasleep's electrical specifications specify 120 VAC, 60 Hz for Classic. Its international-use advice says the domestic Dohm is for the USA and Canada and advises against using a travel converter abroad.

Nova's product FAQ lists the machine and a six-foot barrel-connector power cable, specified as 12V, 1 Amp. Both models are listed as plug-in machines in the family comparison. Neither is the pick here for battery operation, and Nova's supplied connection is not described as USB.

Do not assume that the barrel-connection voltage confirms a worldwide mains-input range. For a gift, choose the intended regional kit and keep the supplied power parts with it.

    Reserve the surface space

The maker lists Classic at 5.6 × 5.6 × 3.5 inches and Nova at 5.6 × 5.6 × 3.7 inches. They therefore need the same nominal surface footprint, with Nova slightly taller. Published product weights are 31.5 oz for Classic and 18 oz for Nova; those are product-page figures, not weights measured by thisHUSH.

For Classic, Yogasleep's Dohm placement guidance says to keep the machine upright on a flat surface and not mount it on a wall. Plan where the machine and its cable will go before choosing a bedside spot.

    Keep cleaning access realistic

Yogasleep's cleaning guidance recommends wiping the exterior with a damp cloth and using a vacuum hose at the openings to remove dust. It specifically advises against opening the Dohm for cleaning.

Nova's removable cover adds a separate fabric item to care for. Although its product page calls the cover machine-washable, we have not verified the full manual's washing and drying directions. Follow the instructions supplied with your unit before washing it; the removable cover is not permission to dismantle the motor housing.

    A gift recipient checklist

Both choices work without app control. We would choose Classic for a recipient who wants simple manual adjustments, and Nova for someone who wants its light or timer. Check their preference for light in the room and access to an outlet before ordering.

    • Yes: Both models: no app control to set up
    • Partly: Nova: choose it if adjustable amber light would be welcome
    • No: Classic: no built-in timer or night light

For a wider shortlist, see our sleep gifts guide. If the recipient wants different sound choices, start with best white noise machines and white vs pink vs brown noise.

    How we choose

This comparison is based on Yogasleep's product pages and official support documents. We have not physically evaluated either machine. We separate documented controls from unverified behavior, identify the power-description mismatch, and leave manual-dependent memory and care details unresolved. More speeds earn Nova a flexibility recommendation, not a claim of better sound or better results.

Our broader research approach is on How we choose.

    Verdict

Buy Classic for simple controls; buy Nova for its additional controls. Nova earns the upgrade when its ten speeds, independent amber light or optional timer would be useful to you. Keep a working Classic if continuous real-fan sound and its manual adjustments already meet your needs.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the Dohm Nova worth upgrading to from a Classic?

Choose Nova if you want its ten fan speeds, adjustable amber night light or optional timer. Classic already provides real, non-looping fan sound with two speeds and adjustable tone. Our recommendation is to keep a working Classic unless one of those specific additions would change how you use it. More settings alone do not establish better sound.

Do the Dohm Nova and Classic play looping recordings?

Neither uses a recording for its fan sound. Yogasleep describes Classic as a real fan motor without digital audio, and Nova as a mechanical fan with no audio files, loops or speakers. Nova's ten settings are fan speeds rather than ten different tracks. Choose between them for their controls and features, rather than an expectation that Nova removes a loop Classic has.

Can the Dohm Nova run continuously with the light off?

Yes. Yogasleep says Nova can run continuously with its optional timer deactivated, and describes the amber light as independent from the sound controls. Press the Light button to switch it on or off; holding it adjusts brightness. The timer cycles through 45 minutes, 90 minutes and 8 hours, then another press deactivates it. Classic has neither a timer nor a night light.

Are the Dohm Nova and Classic USB or battery powered?

These are plug-in machines. Classic's US product page specifies a seven-foot 120V AC cable. Nova's product FAQ specifies a six-foot barrel-connector power cable rated 12V, 1 Amp; its support overview instead describes a six-foot 120V AC cable. Use the supplied power hardware and confirm the adapter label with Yogasleep before buying replacement power parts or assuming international compatibility.

Is the Dohm Nova louder than the Classic?

Yogasleep publishes a maximum of 62.2 dB for Nova and up to 57.4 decibels on Classic's high setting, both at six feet. These are manufacturer figures, not measurements made by thisHUSH. They do not establish the minimum volume, how either sounds in your room or which tone you will prefer. We base the upgrade recommendation on controls and features.
